It's Friday afternoon. Someone just opened a PR. Your freeze policy says no merges after 3pm Friday. But it's not enforced anywhere. It's just a rule people vaguely know about. So the PR sits there, and someone with merge access makes a judgment call. This is how most "no Friday deploys" policies actually work: tribal knowledge, good intentions, and crossed fingers. Works fine until it doesn't. NoShip turns that policy into a required status check on GitHub. No merges get through during a freeze, full stop. No judgment calls required. You can even ask it in Slack: "freeze all repos every Friday at 3pm for 48 hours" and it'll set the recurring schedule. Done. Something unexpected I had to do recently... GitHub has been flaky for a few weeks. Short outages, actions stuck in queue... Just unreliable enough to waste your afternoon. The worst part is the first 30 minutes where you're sure it's you. You rewrite the command. Check your git config. Re-auth. Wonder if you broke something earlier. Then you finally open status.github.com and see a red screaming banner 🤦♂️. Looks like AI coding has quietly pushed up the load on all of these tools. More code, shipped faster, through the same few providers - GitHub, Vercel, OpenAI, Anthropic. Incidents happen more often, and they eat more of your day when they do. I set up notifications for Claude a while back and it felt natural. You expect an AI API to have hiccups. But a GitHub status alert? I wouldn't have guessed I'd need one a year ago. That's why we had to integrate more status updates with Slack recently at LowCode Agency to stay up to day with these outages.

Mitchell Hashimoto, HashiCorp cofounder and Ghostty creator is one of GitHub’s longest-running users. He announced today that he’s leaving the platform after a rough stretch of outages and issues. When someone like Mitchell leaves GitHub, it’s worth asking what changed. GitHub use has exploded with AI use with more than 20 million new repos each month and that is putting a ton of pressure on the platform. With that kind of growth, I think it's amazing they've held things together as well as they have. But for engineering teams, this is a fair question: When a core workflow dependency starts feeling unstable, how long do you wait before you need a fallback plan? The next logical question might be, will the alternative be any better as the growth expands to other platforms? Source control is table stakes and planning around these challenges haven't been something teams have had to actively plan around with GitHub until recently. I still think GitHub is best of breed, but the rapid growth driven by AI makes this a conversation worth having. How have these issues impacted your teams? Has it been enough to get you talking?

Marketers broke GitHub. No, seriously. GitHub's CTO wrote a blog post about availability issues. Buried in there is a graph showing pull requests, commits, and new repos all spiking to record highs. They're migrating to multi-cloud, rearchitecting merge queues, and dealing with incidents from sheer volume they never planned for. Here's what caught my eye: GitHub built for developers. Engineers, open source contributors, DevOps teams. But the people flooding the platform right now are marketers and ops people using AI tools to write code without ever opening a terminal. GitHub is literally breaking under the weight of users it never imagined having. Nobody at GitHub planned a growth strategy for non-developers. That growth just showed up anyway because the world shifted underneath them. Luck? Preparation? Either way, what a story!
