🚀 useEffect vs useLayoutEffect in React — Understanding the Right Tool for the Right Situation While building modern UI with React, developers often rely on hooks like "useEffect" to handle side effects. However, there are scenarios where "useLayoutEffect" becomes the better choice. The key difference lies in when they execute during the rendering lifecycle. 🔹 useEffect runs after the browser paints the UI, making it ideal for tasks such as API calls, subscriptions, logging, and other asynchronous operations. Because it doesn’t block rendering, it helps keep applications performant and responsive. 🔹 useLayoutEffect, on the other hand, runs synchronously after the DOM updates but before the browser paints the screen. This makes it especially useful when working with DOM measurements, layout calculations, or visual adjustments that must occur before the user sees the UI. Using "useLayoutEffect" in these situations helps prevent UI flickering, layout shifts, or incorrect measurements, resulting in a smoother and more predictable user experience. 📌 Rule of thumb • Use "useEffect" for most side effects • Use "useLayoutEffect" when your logic depends on DOM layout or visual synchronization before paint Understanding this subtle difference can help developers build more stable, performant, and visually consistent React applications. Just tried something new in frontend… and I’m kinda liking it 😄 I recently started using shadcn/ui in a real React project, and honestly—it feels different. In a good way. As someone still growing in frontend, I remember how confusing UI libraries used to feel… 👉 Too many props 👉 Theme overrides everywhere 👉 Docs open in 10 tabs just to change one color 😅 But this time? It felt… simple. I ran a CLI command, got actual components inside my project, and suddenly I wasn’t using a UI library… I was working with my own UI code. Here’s what clicked for me 👇 🚀 No more black box The components are right there in my /components folder. I can read them, tweak them, break them (and fix them 😄). 🎨 Consistent design without stress Buttons, forms, dialogs—everything just looks like it belongs together. No random styling battles. 🧩 Feels scalable (even for beginners) I’m not fighting the library. I’m slowly understanding how to build my own UI layer on top of it. Honestly, the biggest change isn’t the UI… It’s the feeling of control. 🚀 React Re-Render 🔄 One of the most important concepts in React is Re-rendering. 1️⃣ What is Re-render? Re-render means: 👉 React updates the UI when state or props change 2️⃣ Simple Example function Counter() { const [count, setCount] = useState(0); return ( <button onClick={() => setCount(count + 1)}> {count} </button> ); } 👉 When you click the button: setCount updates state React re-renders the component UI updates with new value 3️⃣ What triggers Re-render? ✔ State change (useState) ✔ Props change ✔ Parent re-render 4️⃣ Important Myth ❌ 👉 “React reloads the whole page” 🚫 WRONG React only updates the changed parts of the UI using: 👉 Virtual DOM 5️⃣ Behind the Scenes State changes React creates new Virtual DOM Compares with old one (Diffing) Updates only changed elements 👉 This process is called Reconciliation 6️⃣ Problem: Unnecessary Re-renders 😬 Sometimes components re-render even when not needed. Multi-page navigation in React sounds simple. The edge cases are where it gets interesting. 16-web-editorial-layouts is a TypeScript + React project exploring editorial UI patterns — the kind of layout work that separates a functional app from one that actually feels right to use. What I worked through building this: • Route-based code splitting so each editorial section loads independently • Scroll position restoration on back-navigation (not default browser behavior in SPAs) • Responsive layout shifts handled without layout thrash using CSS containment • TypeScript strict mode — catching component interface mismatches at compile time The editorial layout pattern is underrated. It forces you to think about content hierarchy, reading flow, and information density in ways that component-based thinking can obscure. 🚀React’s Virtual DOM When I started learning React, one concept that completely changed how I think about UI performance was the Virtual DOM. Instead of updating the real DOM directly, React creates a lightweight copy of it in memory called the Virtual DOM. Here’s how it works: 🔹 Render Virtual DOM React first creates a virtual representation of the UI using JavaScript objects. 🔹 State Change When the application state changes, React creates a new Virtual DOM tree. 🔹 Diffing React compares the new tree with the previous one using an efficient diffing algorithm. 🔹 Update Real DOM Only the necessary changes are applied to the actual DOM. 💡 Why this matters • Faster UI updates • Avoids full DOM re-rendering • Efficient reconciliation process • Batched state updates • Better performance for complex apps The result: smarter rendering and faster applications. As a React developer, I used to think both hooks were almost the same… until I understood when they run 👇 🔹 useEffect Runs after the browser paints the UI 👉 Non-blocking → Better for performance Perfect for: ✅ API calls ✅ Event listeners ✅ Logging 🔹 useLayoutEffect Runs before the browser paints the UI 👉 Blocking → Can affect performance Used for: ✅ DOM measurements ✅ Layout adjustments ✅ Preventing UI flicker ⚡ The Key Difference: Timing 👉 useLayoutEffect runs first 👉 useEffect runs after paint 💡 Golden Rule Always use useEffect unless you specifically need to measure or modify the DOM before it renders. React does not update the UI when you call setState. Yes, that is correct. And that is exactly what makes React fast. Most developers assume that calling setState immediately updates the screen. But under the hood, React does something much smarter. It schedules It prioritizes It decides the best moment to update All of this happens because of an architecture called React Fiber. Before Fiber, React worked in a blocking way. Once rendering started, it could not be interrupted. The result was UI freezes, less fluid interactions, and poor performance in larger applications. With Fiber, everything changed. React can pause rendering React can prioritize more important updates such as user interactions React can break work into smaller chunks In practice, this means your application stays responsive even when a lot is happening at the same time. User interactions feel smooth, and heavy renders become almost unnoticeable. Here is the part most people miss. You do not control when rendering happens. React does. This changes how you should think about your code. You need to be more careful with side effects You need to understand batching You need to accept that updates are not always immediate If you have ever wondered why something did not update instantly, now you know.
