🔴90% of React applications have performance issues... and most developers don't even realize it. that might sound surprising but it's true. React is fast but it isn't automatically optimized. optimization is your responsibility. so what actually makes a React app slow? the reasons vary but the root cause is almost always the same: unnecessary re-renders. React's main task is to make sure your UI is up to date with your state and when your state changes, it should update the UI. That's normal, right? That's React doing its job. The problem is when it updates UI components that weren't even affected by the state change. think about it You have a parent component with state and inside it, there are 10 child components and only one of them was affected by your state change. 𝗜 𝗰𝘂𝘁 𝗹𝗼𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗯𝘆 𝟰𝟬% 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗥𝗲𝗮𝗰𝘁 𝗮𝗽𝗽 ⚡ No fancy tools. No rewrite. Just fundamentals. At SoftConstruct, I worked on a React.js application that grew over time 🌳. Features were added, nobody refactored, and one day we realized: this thing is slow. Noticeably slow. Management wanted a fix. Fast. Here's exactly what I did: 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟭: 𝗠𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗼𝘂𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 📊 I opened Chrome DevTools, ran Lighthouse, and checked the Performance tab. The biggest problem wasn't the code logic - it was unnecessary re-renders and a massive bundle size. 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟮: 𝗖𝗼𝗱𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 📦 We were importing everything upfront. I introduced React.lazy() and Suspense for routes that didn't need to load immediately. This alone made the initial load noticeably faster. 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟯: 𝗞𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗲-𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 🔁 I found components re-rendering 5-6 times on a single user action. The culprit? Inline functions and objects being passed as props, creating new references every render. I moved them out, used useCallback and useMemo where it actually mattered - not everywhere, just where profiling showed the bottleneck. 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟰: 𝗢𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗮𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗲𝘁𝘀 🖼️ Sounds obvious. It wasn't being done. Compressed images, added lazy loading for below-the-fold content, and removed two unused libraries. 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟱: 𝗔𝘂𝗱𝗶𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀 🧹 We had 3 date libraries. Three. I consolidated to one. Bundle dropped significantly. Result: 40% faster load times. Measured. Verified. Users noticed 🚀 The lesson? Performance optimization in React isn't about knowing clever tricks. It's about measuring, removing what's unnecessary, and being disciplined about what you add. But 90% of the time, the fix is simpler: 🔴 Fetching data in every component independently → Lift it up or use a global state solution 🔴 Importing entire libraries for one function → `import _ from 'lodash'` hurts. I wish someone told me this when I started with React… A few months into building apps, I thought I was doing everything right. Components were working. UI looked fine. Features were shipping. But under the hood? It was a mess. Random bugs. Re-renders I couldn’t explain. Code that worked… until it didn’t. That’s when I realized, React isn’t hard. Bad practices are. Here are some “DON’Ts” that completely changed how I write React: => Don’t mutate state directly, I used to push into arrays and wonder why UI didn’t update properly. => Don’t use index as key, Everything looks fine… until you reorder items and chaos begins. => Don’t create functions inside render unnecessarily, Small mistake, big performance issues in large apps. => Don’t build huge components If your component feels like a novel, it’s already a problem. => Don’t ignore dependency arrays This one silently creates bugs that are painful to debug. => Don’t over optimize early, Using useMemo/useCallback everywhere doesn’t make you smart, just complex. => Don’t skip error handling, Everything works… until the API fails. => Don’t ignore folder structure, Scaling a messy project is a nightmare. 🧠 Part 3 of 10: Duplicated state is one of the fastest ways to make a React app feel unstable. Everything looks fine at first. Then one value updates. The other one doesn’t. Now the UI technically works, but nobody fully trusts it. That’s the part people don’t say enough: a lot of frontend bugs are really trust issues. The UI says one thing. The data says another. Now the team starts building around confusion. Whenever I can, I try to keep state close to a single source of truth. It makes code easier to reason about. And future changes get a lot less annoying. Why React Apps Feel So Fast (Hint: It’s NOT the DOM) When I first started learning React, I thought: “It directly updates the DOM efficiently.” But that’s not the real magic. The real hero? → Virtual DOM Here’s how it works: 1️⃣ React creates a Virtual DOM (a lightweight copy of the real DOM) 2️⃣ When state changes, React creates a new Virtual DOM 3️⃣ It compares the old vs new (this is called diffing) 4️⃣ Only the changed parts are updated in the real DOM (reconciliation) Result: Instead of reloading the entire page, React updates ONLY what changed.
