I built my first full-stack app few months ago. It was terrible. And it was the best thing I ever did. No design. No proper folder structure. No authentication. The CSS looked like it was written by someone who had never seen a website before. But it worked. A React frontend talking to an Express backend, saving data to MongoDB, running on Node.js. I remember hitting that final endpoint in Postman and seeing { "success": true } come back. I sat there for a full minute just staring at it. Because six weeks before that moment, I did not know what an API even was. I thought "backend" was just a mysterious place where senior developers lived. I copy-pasted every piece of code I wrote and barely understood half of it. But that ugly, broken, over-engineered little app taught me more than any tutorial ever did. It taught me that React components are not magic — they are just functions that return UI. It taught me that Express is not complicated — it is just a traffic controller for your server. It taught me that MongoDB does not need a perfect schema — it just needs your data to make sense. Most importantly it taught me this: You do not learn MERN by watching tutorials. You learn MERN by building something broken and then fixing it. Every senior developer you admire has a graveyard of terrible first projects. That graveyard is exactly how they got good. React State Management doesn't need to be painful. I just spent today trying out Zustand for a simple Todo app, and I'm genuinely impressed. As a full-stack developer comfortable with the ecosystem, I love Redux, but sometimes the boilerplate feels like overkill just to manage a few booleans and strings. Zustand changed that for me today. Here’s why it’s my new default for React state: 1. Zero Boilerplate Setup: You create the store, define the state and actions in one hook, and you’re done. The setup complexity is virtually zero compared to Redux Toolkit. 2. Built-in Middleware (The Real Game-Changer): This is where it gets powerful. I didn't have to install separate libraries for persistence or mutable state. 3. Automatic Persistence: With just the persist middleware, I hooked my entire store up to localStorage with a single config object. 4. Immutability Made Simple: I used the immer middleware. I can update state directly (like state.todos.push()), and Immer handles making it safe and immutable behind the scenes. No more complex nested object spreads. I've attached the code snippet showing exactly how I combined persist and immer. It’s clean, readable, and effective. A 3-second API response taught me more about Laravel than any tutorial ever did. 🐌 Last month, our /posts endpoint slowed to a crawl in production. Everything worked fine on staging — but with real data, it was unusable. The culprit? A classic N+1 query problem hiding inside an innocent foreach loop. Post::all() returned 100 posts. Then for every single post, Laravel ran another query to fetch the author. That's 101 queries for one request. The fix took 9 characters: ->with('author'). Two queries. Total. Response time dropped from 2.8s → 180ms. What I actually learned: → Eloquent's elegance can hide expensive operations → Always run Laravel Debugbar or Telescope in dev — see your queries → Eager-load aggressively when shipping data to a React/Next.js frontend; the client doesn't care how clean your code looks if the API is slow → "It works" ≠ "it scales" The mistake wasn't writing bad code. It was trusting that pretty syntax meant efficient execution.
