Every automation I've built had one annoying dependency: the machine running it had to stay online. Cron jobs. A VPS to host the scheduler. Midnight checks to confirm it's still alive. Anthropic shipped routines for Claude Code yesterday. Scheduled tasks that run on their infrastructure. Not yours. Laptop can be off. Pro: 5 routines/day. Max: 15. Team and Enterprise: 25. Half the automation work is just keeping the automation alive. That's the problem this kills. Still a research preview. But the direction is obvious: Anthropic isn't building a better coding assistant. They're building the runtime.

Missing unit tests almost broke our company. In one of our early large machine projects, a lot of logic had been “tested.” But what that really meant was: the standard case looked fine in simulation. The edge cases were a different story. Once the project got more complex, strange behaviors started to appear. Nothing fully reproducible. Nothing obviously catastrophic. Just enough instability to destroy trust in the codebase. That was the dangerous part: we thought we had reliability, but we mostly had confidence without proof. Since then, we changed our approach completely. Today, most of our critical reusable logic sits in heavily tested libraries. And when a weird machine behavior appears, we can usually narrow down the cause in minutes instead of losing days searching everywhere. Unit tests do not just prevent bugs. They reduce fear. They speed up diagnosis. And they make complex engineering organisations scalable. Manual testing tells you that something worked once. Automated tests tell you whether it is still safe to trust. A confession from someone who builds automations for a living: Up until recently, I was only testing the happy path. Trigger fires. Action runs. Output lands where it should. Tick. Move on. But automation isn't fragile because the happy path breaks — it's fragile because everything else does. The API times out. The webhook payload arrives malformed. The trigger fires twice. The file's the wrong format. It runs at 2am and fails silently. I wasn't building for any of that. I was building for the demo. So from this build forward, edge case testing is part of the scope. Priced in, not bolted on. Failure modes get mapped, error handling gets built, and the system gets stress-tested before handover — not after the client emails me at 7pm on a Tuesday because something didn't fire. The bit that's humbling: this should've been standard from day one. Sometimes the upgrade isn't a new tool. It's just doing the basics properly.
