🚀 Ready to introduce Artificial Intelligence to your students without needing a degree in data science? Meet the BBC micro:bit V2! The upgraded micro:bit V2, equipped with an ARM Cortex-M4 processor, packs enough computational power to run "Edge AI" and machine learning (ML) applications right in the classroom. It is a fantastic, hands-on tool to transform students from consumers of technology into digital creators. Here is how you can explore AI with your students using the micro:bit CreateAI platform: 🔍 1. Data Collection: Students start by gathering real-world data using the micro:bit's built-in sensors. For example, by strapping the device to their wrist, they can use the accelerometer to record the unique motion "signatures" of walking, running, and standing still. 🧠 2. Train & Test the Model: Using the CreateAI website, humans train the machine learning model to recognize these distinct physical actions. Students can immediately test the model to see if it accurately guesses their current action, improving it by supplying more data if it makes mistakes. 💻 3. Deploy & Code: Once the model is trained, it can be opened in the MakeCode editor, combined with visual drag-and-drop code blocks, and downloaded directly to the physical micro:bit. The device can then classify activities autonomously in real-time! 🏃♀️ Project Spotlight: AI Sports Data Logger A perfect classroom activity is the AI Sports Data Logger. Students can combine their trained ML model with the micro:bit’s data logging function to record what action they are doing every second. The micro:bit V2 retains this logged data even when the power is disconnected. Later, students can plug the device into a computer and use a web browser to visualize their activity levels in line graphs, bar charts, or pie charts. With additional built-in features like a microphone and speaker, plus compatibility with third-party computer vision modules (like the HuskyLens or Smart AI Lens), the possibilities for AI projects are endless!
