🚀 Back in the Flow: Mastering Performance in React After a brief break, I’m back to what I love—building and solving logic. Today, I focused on optimizing search functionality using Debouncing in React. When building a search bar, hitting an API on every single keystroke is expensive and inefficient. To solve this, I implemented a custom debouncing logic inside a useEffect hook. 💡 Key Highlights of this Implementation: Controlled Input: Using useState to manage the search query. Debounce Logic: I used setTimeout to delay the API call by 700ms. This ensures the request only fires after the user has stopped typing. Memory Management: A crucial cleanup function (clearTimeout) to prevent memory leaks and race conditions if the user continues typing. Async/Await: Handling API fetching cleanly within the hook. Building these kinds of "logic-heavy" small components is what sharpens the mind for large-scale applications. It's not just about making it work; it's about making it efficient. I spent months writing async Node.js code without really understanding it. Then a production bug taught me the event loop the hard way. Here's what you need to know: Node.js is single-threaded — but it handles thousands of concurrent requests without freezing. How? The event loop. It has 4 key parts: 1. Call Stack — Your sync code runs here, line by line. One thing at a time. 2. libuv Thread Pool — Async tasks (file I/O, HTTP requests) get offloaded here. Your code keeps running. 3. Microtask Queue — Promise callbacks live here. They run BEFORE anything else queued. 4. Macrotask Queue — setTimeout and setInterval callbacks wait here. This explains a classic JS gotcha: console.log('1') setTimeout(() => console.log('2'), 0) Promise.resolve().then(() => console.log('3')) console.log('4') Output: 1 → 4 → 3 → 2 The Promise fires before the setTimeout — even with a 0ms delay. 💡 Lesson Learned Today: While working on implementing search functionality in a React + Redux application, I faced an issue where the search input was updating correctly… but the results were not filtered at all 🤔 After debugging, I discovered an important insight: 👉 Not every “search issue” comes from the frontend. ✔️ The request was being sent correctly ✔️ The search parameter was included in the API call ❌ But the backend endpoint didn’t support filtering with that parameter 🔍 What I learned: Always verify: Is the correct parameter name being sent? Is the backend actually using it? Most React devs use hooks daily… But a lot of us are using them wrong (or at least inefficiently). Here are 5 React Hooks you're probably misusing 👇 1. useEffect: Doing too much If your useEffect looks like a mini backend service… that’s a red flag. 👉 Keep it focused: one responsibility per effect. 👉 Avoid unnecessary dependencies (or missing ones 😬). 2. useState: Over-fragmenting state Multiple useState calls for tightly related data = messy logic. 👉 Consider grouping related state into one object 👉 Or use useReducer for complex flows 3. useMemo: Premature optimization Not everything needs memoization. 👉 If your calculation is cheap, skip it 👉 Overusing useMemo can hurt readability more than it helps performance 4. useCallback: Blind usage Wrapping every function in useCallback ≠ optimization 👉 Only use it when passing functions to memoized components 👉 Otherwise, you're just adding complexity 5. useRef: Misunderstood power It’s not just for DOM access 👉 Great for persisting values without re-renders 👉 Perfect for timers, previous values, or mutable variables 💡 Rule of thumb: If you can’t clearly explain why you're using a hook… you probably don’t need it. 🚀 Understanding Node.js Internals: Event Loop & Thread Pool This week, I took a deeper dive into how Node.js actually works behind the scenes — and it completely changed how I think about asynchronous code. 🔹 JavaScript in Node.js runs on a single thread 🔹 Yet it handles multiple tasks efficiently using the Event Loop 🔹 Heavy operations are offloaded to the Thread Pool (via libuv) Some key takeaways: Event Loop manages execution in phases (Timers, I/O, setImmediate, etc.) setTimeout(0) is not truly immediate setImmediate() behaves differently inside vs outside I/O process.nextTick() runs before the event loop even starts Understanding these concepts makes async behavior much more predictable and helps write better backend code.
