React Hooks You Should Be Using (but Probably Aren’t) After working with React for a few years, I’ve realized that most of us only use the “famous five”: useState, useEffect, useContext, useRef, and useMemo. But React gives us so many powerful hooks that can make our code cleaner, faster, and more maintainable. Here are a few underrated ones 1. useCallback Ever had a child component re-render unnecessarily? useCallback helps you memoize functions so they don’t get recreated every render. Perfect for performance optimization. 2. useReducer When state logic gets complex, useReducer brings structure — think of it as a mini Redux inside your component. 3. useLayoutEffect Runs synchronously after DOM mutations — great for reading layout or synchronizing scroll/size before the browser paints. Just don’t overuse it — it blocks painting. 4. useImperativeHandle Used with forwardRef() — it lets you control what gets exposed to parent components through refs. React Performance Tips — From My Experience as a Developer After working with React and Next.js for over 3.5 years, one thing I’ve learned is — performance matters as much as functionality. Even a beautiful UI feels frustrating if it’s slow. Here are some practical React performance tips I’ve learned (and actually use) 1. Use React.memo wisely It prevents unnecessary re-renders by memoizing components — but don’t wrap everything! Use it where props rarely change. 2. Use useCallback & useMemo for expensive operations These hooks help cache functions or computed values, reducing unnecessary recalculations. 3. Lazy load components Split your bundle using React.lazy() or dynamic imports in Next.js — load components only when needed. 4. Avoid inline functions & objects Inline functions or objects inside JSX re-create on every render. Move them outside or memoize them. 5. Use virtualization for large lists For rendering big datasets, use libraries like react-window or react-virtualized — they only render visible items. 6. Optimize images & media In Next.js, the next/image component automatically handles lazy loading, resizing, and format optimization. 7. Keep state local where possible Global states (like Redux) re-render large parts of the app. Use component-level or context-based state when suitable. 8. Profile before optimizing Use React DevTools Profiler to identify actual bottlenecks — don’t optimize blindly. Remember: React is already fast — it’s our code that slows it down. ⚛️ Frontend Dev Series (Part 13): Things I Wish I Knew About useEffect Sooner If you’ve ever crashed your React app because of useEffect()… welcome to the club. 😅 I learned this hook the hard way — and I wish someone had explained it like this 👇 🔹 1️⃣ useEffect ≠ Lifecycle It’s not the new componentDidMount. It’s for side effects — anything that happens because state or props changed. 🔹 2️⃣ The Infinite Loop Trap When useEffect() updates a state that’s also in its dependency array → BOOM 💥 Infinite renders. Fix: Never trigger what you’re depending on. 🔹 3️⃣ The Dependency Array Rule [] → run once [value] → run when value changes No array → run every render. Miss this = chaos. 🔹 4️⃣ Timing Matters useEffect runs after render. That’s why you sometimes see flickers or incomplete UI before data loads. Need sync behavior? Use useLayoutEffect. 🔹 5️⃣ Cleanup is Key Always clean your mess. Unsubscribe from listeners, clear intervals, abort fetches — or you’ll create invisible memory leaks. 🔹 6️⃣ The Real Purpose useEffect connects React to the outside world — APIs, events, sockets, DOM, etc. It’s not for every little logic you can think of. 💭 Final Thought: The best React devs don’t use useEffect everywhere. 🧩 Pure Functions — The Unsung Hero of Clean React Code After 4 years in web development, one lesson has stuck with me: 👉 Predictable code is maintainable code. Early in my React journey, I often faced weird UI bugs — the kind that appeared only sometimes. I’d pass the same props, but the component behaved differently. The issue? My components weren’t pure. 💢 💡 A pure function is beautifully simple: ✅ Returns the same output for the same inputs ✅ Has zero side effects (doesn’t modify anything outside its scope) This concept completely changed how I write React components. ⚛️ In React, pure components behave like mathematical functions — for the same props, they’ll always produce the same UI. No hidden state. No unexpected behavior. Just consistency. 💻 Example — A Pure Function Component: const Greeting = ({ name }) => { return <h1>Hello, {name}!</h1>; }; No matter how many times it renders, if name = "Shweta", you’ll always get the same output: Hello, Shweta!
