⚙️ JavaScript – Prototypes & Classes Understanding Object-Oriented JavaScript JavaScript is not a class-based language by default. It uses prototypes to share properties and methods between objects. Understanding prototypes and classes helps you write structured, reusable, and scalable code. 🔹 What Is Prototypal Inheritance? Prototypal inheritance means objects can inherit properties and methods from other objects. Every JavaScript object has a hidden property that links it to another object called its prototype. 👉 This is how JavaScript achieves inheritance. 🔹 What Is __proto__? __proto__ is a reference to an object’s prototype. It points to the object from which properties are inherited Used internally by JavaScript Direct usage is not recommended (use Object.getPrototypeOf() instead) 👉 Through __proto__, JavaScript looks up properties in the prototype chain. 🔹 Prototype Chain When you access a property: JavaScript checks the object itself If not found, it checks its prototype Continues up the chain until null 👉 This chain is called the prototype chain. 🔹 Class Syntax (ES6) Classes are syntactic sugar over JavaScript’s prototype system. They provide a cleaner and more readable way to write object-oriented code. Under the hood, JavaScript still uses prototypes. 🔹 Constructor Method The constructor method is used to initialize object properties. Runs automatically when a new object is created Sets initial values Only one constructor per class 👉 Helps create multiple objects with similar structure. 🔹 Extending Classes (extends) The extends keyword is used to create a child class from a parent class. 🧠 A Mental Model for Understanding JavaScript Closures Why Closures Feel Hard (and why they actually aren’t) Over the last two days, I’ve been reflecting on why closures are so often misunderstood, and I wanted to search for a mental model that could make them easier to grasp. Here’s the mental model that came to me. One important reason I wanted to do that for myself first: humans understand abstract concepts much better when they can relate them to something tangible. Closures are often described as one of the most confusing JavaScript concepts. After revisiting the topic, I realized the confusion does not come from the concept itself, but from how it is usually explained. After reflecting on it, I identified three main reasons: 1️⃣ You can’t directly observe a closure. It’s not something you can console.log. You can only infer it from JavaScript’s behavior. 2️⃣ The role of the Garbage Collector is rarely stated explicitly. JavaScript keeps in memory every variable that is still reachable from an existing function. As long as a function instance is alive, the lexical environment it references must remain alive too. This is fundamental to how closures work. 3️⃣ Key properties are often missing from most definitions. In particular: - the inner function must escape and continue to live outside the environment where it was created - JavaScript treats functions as values, like any other variable and this design choice forces closures to exist. So instead of an abstract definition, I built a mental model. 🧩 Mental Model: Learning & Recognition Think of a function as a moment of learning. Inside that moment there are books, articles, diagrams. The inner function is you. When the learning moment ends, the room is closed. But you walk outside carrying the ability to recognize what you learned like identifying a fir tree in the forest, and knowing you can always go back to the room to consult the book if needed. That continuing relationship between you and the place where you learned is what a closure really is: a function that lives outside (and remains connected to) its original lexical environment. 🚀 Why Closures Matter Closures solve real engineering problems: 🎯 private variables and encapsulation 🎯 state preservation across executions 🎯 callbacks and event handlers 🎯 async control flow 🎯 module systems 🎯 the foundations of modern frameworks and hooks Closures feel hard because they combine memory, execution, and time which are things we can’t see, but use every day. 🚀 Mastering the JavaScript Event Loop: Call Stack vs. Callback Queue vs. Microtask Queue Ever felt confused by how JavaScript handles asynchronous operations? You aren't alone! 🤯 Understanding the "under-the-hood" mechanics of the JS runtime is often the difference between a good developer and a great one—and it’s a favorite topic for technical interviews. Here is the breakdown you need to ace your next interview and write better code. 👇 1️⃣ The Call Stack (The Boss 👔) Think of the Call Stack as the main thread's "To-Do" list. JavaScript is single-threaded, meaning it can only do one thing at a time. Mechanism: LIFO (Last In, First Out). Job: It executes the function currently in progress. Rule: Nothing else happens until the stack is clear. If you block this, you freeze the browser! 2️⃣ The Microtask Queue (The VIP Line 🌟) This is where Promises and MutationObserver callbacks wait. Priority: High. Job: Once the Call Stack is empty, the Event Loop checks here first. Key Detail: The engine will process all tasks in this queue before moving on. If a microtask adds more microtasks, they all get run before the next render! 3️⃣ The Callback Queue (The Regular Line 🚶) Also known as the Task Queue or Macrotask Queue. This is where setTimeout, setInterval, and DOM events wait. Priority: Lower. Job: The Event Loop picks tasks from here only after the Call Stack AND the Microtask Queue are completely empty. ⚡ The "Aha!" Moment: The Order of Operations Imagine the Event Loop as a traffic controller. Here is the strict sequence it follows: Execute script: Run sync code in the Call Stack. Stack Empty? Check the Microtask Queue (Promises). Run everything there. Render: Update the UI (if needed). Next Task: Grab one item from the Callback Queue (setTimeout). Repeat. 🔥 Pro Tip: This is why setTimeout(fn, 0) doesn't run immediately. It forces the function to the back of the line, waiting for the stack and microtasks to clear first! 🧠 Why This Matters Performance: heavy microtasks can block rendering. Debugging: Understanding execution order fixes "race conditions." Interviews: This is a top-tier system design and logic question. Module 2: JavaScript – A Quick Refresher (What I Learned) In this module, I refreshed my understanding of JavaScript fundamentals, which are essential for working effectively with Node.js. The focus was on revisiting how JavaScript works, what it is used for, and the core syntax needed to write clean and functional code. JavaScript Overview (My Understanding) JavaScript is a weakly typed, object-oriented, and very versatile programming language. Being weakly typed means I don’t have to explicitly define data types—JavaScript automatically handles types like numbers, strings, and booleans. Its object-oriented nature allows data and behavior to be grouped logically into objects, making code more organized and reusable. JavaScript is also versatile because it can run both in the browser and directly on a server or PC, enabling it to handle a wide range of tasks. Core JavaScript Features I Revisited Variables (var) I learned that variables can be created using the var keyword, although it is now considered outdated and not recommended for modern JavaScript development. Functions Functions are defined using the function keyword and may or may not return a value. The return statement exits the function and optionally sends a value back to where the function was called. Functions are executed by adding parentheses () after the function name. Modern (Next-Gen) JavaScript Syntax • let I use let when I expect the value of a variable to change over time. • const I use const when the value assigned to a variable should never be reassigned. This helps make my code safer and more predictable. Arrow Functions I learned another way to write functions using arrow functions, which are more concise and commonly used in modern JavaScript. Example: const fetch = () => {}; When an arrow function contains only one expression, I can omit both the return keyword and curly braces: const add = (a, b) => a + b; Objects Objects are unordered collections of key-value pairs used to group related data. Properties represent data, while methods represent functions inside the object. I also learned how the "this" keyword works—it refers to the surrounding object and allows access to its properties and methods. Arrays Arrays are ordered collections of items, where each item is accessed using an index starting from 0. Arrays can contain any data type. I also learned about built-in array methods like map, which allows me to transform data and returns a new array without modifying the original one.

Today, I went back to revise one of the most important fundamentals from Akshay Saini 🚀 #NamasteJavaScript 𝐒𝐜𝐨𝐩𝐞, 𝐋𝐞𝐱𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐄𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐜𝐨𝐩𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐧. Let’s understand this using the image below. When the code shown in the image is executed: 1. First, it creates the 𝐆𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐄𝐱𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐱𝐭 (bottom box in the image) 2. When function a() is called, a 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐄𝐱𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐱𝐭 is pushed to the call stack 3. When function c() is called, 𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐄𝐱𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐱𝐭 is created on top As, I already posted in my previous post each execution context has 𝐭𝐰𝐨 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐬: • Memory • Code And 𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐚𝐥𝐬𝐨 𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐬 𝐚 𝐋𝐞𝐱𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐄𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 — which contains: • Its local variables • And a 𝐫𝐞𝐟𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭’𝐬 𝐥𝐞𝐱𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐞𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 (shown by arrows in the image orange box's) Now comes the most important part: 𝐒𝐜𝐨𝐩𝐞 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐧 When c() tries to access a variable: • It first looks in 𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐨𝐰𝐧 𝐦𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐲 • If not found → it follows the 𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐭 (𝐟𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚) • If still not found → it goes to 𝐆𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 • If still not found → ❌ ReferenceError This 𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐡 𝐨𝐟 𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐬 is called the Scope Chain. So in this diagram: • c() does not find the variable in its own memory • It goes one level up to a( ) memory • Finds it there • And executes successfully But when we try to access the same variable from 𝐠𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥, there is 𝐧𝐨 𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐡 𝐮𝐩𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐝 — so JavaScript throws an error. It matters where the function is written, not where it is called. That’s why it’s called 𝐋𝐞𝐱𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐒𝐜𝐨𝐩𝐞. 𝐒𝐜𝐨𝐩𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐟𝐢𝐱𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞, 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐚𝐭 𝐫𝐮𝐧 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞. If you truly understand this diagram: * Closures become easy * Hoisting becomes logical * Async code becomes less “magical” * Debugging becomes 10x clearer Going back to fundamentals again and again is 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐚 𝐰𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞.
