AUTHENTICATION vs AUTHORIZATION They sound similar… but they are not the same. Here’s the difference: 👉 Authentication = Who are you? 👉 Authorization = What are you allowed to do? Simple example: When you log into your email: • You enter your password → Authentication • You try to access admin settings → Authorization Cybersecurity is built on these two layers. If authentication fails → anyone can get in. If authorization fails → the wrong person gets access. And that’s how breaches happen. Most beginners focus on “hacking tools”… But the real foundation is understanding how systems control access. No solid access control = no real security. As I keep learning, I’m realizing: Cybersecurity is less about “breaking in” and more about controlling who gets in, and what they can do. 📌 Master the basics. One of the most common questions I see from people trying to break into cybersecurity is: “Should I focus on certifications, get a degree, or just self-study?” The honest answer? It depends but not in the way most people think. In my latest video, I share my experience with all three: certifications, degree, and self-study, and how each one impacted my journey into cybersecurity. A few key points I discuss: 📌 Certifications can open doors but only if you understand how to apply the knowledge. 📌 Degrees provide structure, but they are not the only path into cybersecurity. 📌 Self-study is powerful, but without direction, it can quickly become overwhelming. What mattered most for me wasn’t choosing one over the other, it was understanding when and how to use each effectively. Cybersecurity is a broad field, and there’s no one-size-fits-all approach.
