💡 You don’t need JavaScript to show elements on hover. Many developers still reach for JavaScript when they want to show UI elements on hover. But in most cases, pure CSS can handle it cleanly. Recently, I used this Tailwind pattern: ------------------------------------- lg:opacity-0 lg:group-hover:opacity-100 lg:transition-opacity lg:duration-200 lg:ease-in-out -------------------------------------- This keeps the element hidden initially and smoothly reveals it when the parent element is hovered. But there is one important requirement 👇 The parent element must have the group class, otherwise group-hover will not work. Refer to the image attached. Why use `lg` here specifically? Hover interactions don't exist on most touch devices. By limiting this behavior to large screens, the interaction only activates on desktop environments where hover actually makes sense. On smaller screens, these elements remain visible by default. Why is this pattern useful? • Perfect for action buttons inside cards. • Keeps the UI clean until the user interacts. • No JavaScript event listeners needed. Sometimes the best frontend solution isn’t writing more JavaScript. It’s leveraging CSS the way it was designed to work. 🚀 #buildinpublic

🚀 Just came across something exciting in the frontend world: Pretext — a lightweight, pure TypeScript/JavaScript library for precise multiline text measurement and layout. Built by Cheng Lou (@_chenglou), Pretext simulates browser text rendering without touching the DOM. No more expensive getBoundingClientRect() or offsetHeight calls that trigger layout reflows. ### Why it matters: - Blazing fast performance — perfect for virtualized lists, masonry layouts, dynamic multi-column text, and 120fps UIs. - Extremely accurate — matches real browser behavior across Chrome, Safari, and Firefox. - Full multilingual support (including complex scripts like Korean + Arabic mixes, emojis, and more). - Renders to DOM, Canvas, SVG — and server-side rendering is coming soon. It was developed with heavy AI-assisted iteration, using the browser’s own font engine as the source of truth. This opens the door to next-level text-heavy interfaces that were previously painful or slow to build. After my last post about Vanilla CSS, a few people asked: "But how do you handle the 'click' state without JavaScript?" The answer is simpler than you think: The Checkbox Hack. By using a hidden <input type="checkbox"> and the :checked pseudo-class, you can: Toggle menus with zero JS. Keep your HTML semantic. Ensure 100% performance on low-end devices. Here’s the 3-step logic: 1.HTML: Wrap your menu in a label connected to a hidden checkbox. 2.CSS: Set the menu to display: none (or transform: scale(0) for better animation). 3.The Magic: Use input:checked ~ .menu { display: block; }. Modern CSS features like :focus-within and the new popover API are making JavaScript "glue code" a thing of the past. Progressive enhancement is having a well-deserved moment again — and HTML-first frameworks like **HTMX** and **Astro** are a big reason why. For years, a lot of web development defaulted to shipping more JavaScript than most pages actually needed. The result: slower loads, more complexity, and fragile UX when scripts fail. What I like about **HTMX** and **Astro** is that they bring the focus back to the web’s strengths: - **Start with HTML** - **Layer on interactivity only where it adds value** - **Keep the baseline experience fast and accessible** With **HTMX**, you can build dynamic interfaces using server-rendered HTML and small, targeted interactions — without turning everything into a client-side app. With **Astro**, you can ship mostly static HTML and hydrate interactive components only when necessary. That means: ✅ Better performance ✅ Simpler architecture ✅ More resilient UX ✅ Easier accessibility wins ✅ Less JavaScript by default This doesn’t mean SPAs are dead. It means we finally have better tools for choosing the *right amount* of JavaScript instead of assuming every page needs the maximum amount. Progressive enhancement isn’t old-fashioned. It’s practical. Build from a solid HTML foundation first. Then enhance. In this project, I focused on strengthening my JavaScript logic and functionality by creating a fully working calculator with a modern UI design. 🚀 What is JavaScript? Think of it as Your Personal Website Butler 🤔 Imagine you're at a hotel, and you want to request a wake-up call or extra towels. You can't just walk into the staff room and tell them yourself. Instead, you give your request to the butler, who then communicates it to the right person. In web development, JavaScript acts like that butler. It's a programming language that helps your website interact with users, making it dynamic and engaging. When you click a button, fill out a form, or scroll through a page, JavaScript is working behind the scenes to make that happen. For example, let's say you have a website with a button that says "Click me!" When you click that button, JavaScript can make it change color, display a message, or even load new content without needing to reload the entire page.
