A very common React mistake I see developers make: Mutating State When I was learning React, one concept that changed the way I write code was this rule: 👉 React state must never be mutated.its always immutable. But why? React does not deeply compare objects or arrays when state updates. Instead, it performs a reference(memory) comparison. That means React checks: Old State === New State ? If the reference is the same, React assumes nothing changed and skips re-rendering. Example of a mistake: cart.push(product) // ❌ Mutating state setCart(cart) Here we modified the same array in memory, so React may not detect the change because the memory location is same.so no re-render..no UI update. The correct approach is immutability: setCart([...cart, product]) // ✅ Creating a new array Now React sees a new reference, triggers reconciliation, and updates the UI correctly. 💡 Why React prefers immutability: • Faster change detection • Predictable state updates • Easier debugging • Better performance This small concept explains why patterns like: map() filter() spread operator (...) are used so frequently in React. because all this returns new object or array... Why do we specifically pass 'props' into 'super(props)' in a React component constructor? It is one of those things many developers do out of habit without realizing the actual mechanism behind it. While calling 'super()' is a JavaScript requirement to initialize the 'this' keyword, passing 'props' is a very specific React requirement for the constructor phase. The reason is simple: visibility. When you call 'super(props)', you are telling the parent 'React.Component' class to initialize 'this.props' for you immediately. If you only call 'super()' without the argument, 'this.props' will be undefined inside the constructor. React eventually assigns props to the instance anyway, but that happens after the constructor has finished running. If your logic requires you to access a property or compute a state based on a prop right inside the constructor, forgetting the 'props' argument will crash your logic. You would be trying to read from a variable that hasn't been wired up to the instance yet. Even though modern React code bases have shifted to Functional Components where this ceremony is gone, the underlying logic of when data becomes available to an instance is a core part of the library’s history. Most React performance advice is wrong. Not because the patterns are bad but because developers apply them without understanding what React is actually doing. Here’s what I’ve learned: React.memo without useCallback is just theater. memo tells React: “Only re-render if prop references change.” But if you pass a new function reference on every render, memo does absolutely nothing. // ❌ Kills memo on every render <ProductCard onSelect={(id) => handleSelect(id)} /> // ✅ Actually works const handleSelect = useCallback((id) => { dispatch({ type: "SELECT", payload: id }); }, [dispatch]); useMemo has a cost use it surgically. React still performs dependency comparison on every render. For cheap computations, the memoization overhead can be higher than simply recalculating. Use useMemo only when: the computation is genuinely expensive the result is passed to a memoized child you’ve measured it, not assumed it Before reaching for memo or useMemo, ask: What is actually triggering the re-render? Can you eliminate the trigger instead of memoizing around it? Structural state changes beat memoization every time. ✨ Just wrapped a class on React — and my perspective on frontend dev has completely shifted. Before class, I thought React was just "fancy JavaScript." After class? I realize it's a whole new way of thinking about UIs. 🧠 Here's what clicked for me: 🔹 Components are like LEGO blocks Everything in React is a reusable piece — buttons, navbars, cards. You build once, use everywhere. No more copy-pasting the same HTML 10 times. 🔹 The Virtual DOM is React's superpower Instead of updating the entire page on every change, React creates a virtual copy of the DOM, compares it, and only updates what changed. Blazing fast. Incredibly smart. 🔹 State = the memory of your UI useState taught me that UI is just a function of data. Change the data → UI updates automatically. No manual DOM manipulation. No document.getElementById headaches. 🙌 🔹 Props make components talk to each other Data flows down through props, and events bubble up through callbacks. Once you get this parent-child relationship, React just makes sense. 🔹 JSX is not scary — it's beautiful HTML inside JavaScript? Sounds weird. But JSX lets you co-locate your logic and markup, making components self-contained and readable. 💡 The biggest lesson? React teaches you to think in components, not in pages. Why do we need to call 'super(props)' in the constructor of a React component? JavaScript classes aren't magic. They are just syntactic sugar over prototypes. If you are still using (or have used) Class Components in React, you have likely typed 'super(props)' a thousand times. But do you actually know what happens if you forget it? In JavaScript, you cannot use the keyword 'this' in a constructor until you have called the parent constructor. Since your component extends 'React.Component', calling 'super()' is what actually initializes the 'this' object. If you try to access 'this.state' or 'this.props' before that call, JavaScript will throw a ReferenceError and crash your app. But why pass 'props' into it? React sets 'this.props' for you automatically after the constructor runs. However, if you want to access 'this.props' inside the constructor itself, you must pass them to 'super(props)'. If you just call 'super()', 'this.props' will be undefined until the constructor finishes execution. Most of us have moved to Functional Components where this isn't an issue. Maga Look again.👇🐘🐘🐘 function App() { const [count, setCount] = useState(0); const handleClick = () => { setTimeout(() => { setCount(count + 1); }, 1000); setCount(count + 1); }; return ( <> <p>{count}</p> <button onClick={handleClick}>Click</button> </> ); } Most developers say: 👉 “First +1 immediately, then +1 after 1 second → final = 2” ❌ Wrong 🧠 What actually happens setCount(count + 1) → updates to 1 setTimeout callback runs later… But it uses stale count = 0 (closure!) 👉 So it sets 1 again 🎯 Final Result Count = 1, not 2 🚨 The real problem This is not a React bug This is a JavaScript closure + event loop problem Functions capture old state Async callbacks don’t magically get updated values React state is snapshot-based, not live ✅ Fix setCount(prev => prev + 1); ✔ Always use functional updates when state depends on previous value ✔ Works correctly with async (timeouts, promises, events) 💡 Takeaway If your mental model is: 👉 “state updates automatically everywhere” You’ll ship bugs. If your mental model is: 👉 “state is captured at execution time” You’ll write predictable systems. This is the difference between writing code that works… and code that scales in production. React Re-rendering Is NOT What You Think… When I started React, I thought: “State changes → Component re-renders → Done” Simple… right? But I was completely WRONG Truth: React doesn’t just re-render that one variable It re-renders the ENTIRE component Example: const [count, setCount] = useState(0); console.log("Component Rendered"); Every click → Whole component runs again All functions re-created All calculations re-execute The Mistake I Made: I was doing heavy work inside components like: const filteredData = data.filter(...) So every render → Expensive calculations again Performance drop The Fix (Game Changer): useMemo() const filteredData = useMemo(() => { return data.filter(...) }, [data]); -----Now it only runs when needed Another Hidden Issue: Functions inside components const handleClick = () => {} Re-created on EVERY render Fix? useCallback() Golden Rule: If something is: Expensive → useMemo Function passed to child → useCallback My Learning: React is not about writing code It’s about controlling re-renders What about you? ⚛️ React Tip: When Should You Use useCallback? While working on React applications, one common performance issue developers face is unnecessary component re-renders. One hook that often comes up in this discussion is useCallback. But many developers (including me earlier) either overuse it or use it incorrectly. So here’s a simple way to understand it. 🔹 What does useCallback do? `useCallback` memoizes a function. This means React will reuse the same function instance unless its dependencies change. Example 👇 const handleClick = useCallback(() => { console.log("Button clicked"); }, []); Without `useCallback`, a new function is created every time the component re-renders. Most of the time this isn’t a problem. But it becomes important when passing functions to memoized child components. 🔹 Example scenario Imagine a parent component passing a function as a prop to a child component wrapped with `React.memo`. If the function reference changes on every render, the child component will also re-render unnecessarily. Using `useCallback` helps keep the function reference stable, preventing those extra renders. 🔹 When should you actually use it? ✅ When passing callbacks to memoized components ✅ When the function is a dependency in another hook ✅ When optimizing large component trees ⚠️ When NOT to use it: • For every function in your component • When there is no performance issue • Just because someone said it improves performance 💡 One important lesson I’ve learned: Optimization should be intentional, not automatic. React already does a lot of work under the hood. Use hooks like `useCallback` only when they actually solve a problem. I made React slower trying to optimize it. Wrapped everything in useMemo. Added useCallback everywhere. Felt productive. Performance got worse. Here's what I didn't understand about re-renders 👇 4 things that trigger a re-render: > State change > Prop change > Parent re-renders (even if YOUR props didn't change) > Context update That third one is responsible of unnecessary re-renders I've seen in real codebases. The fix isn't memorizing APIs. It's this order: 1. Profile first Open React DevTools Profiler. Find the actual problem. Takes 2 minutes. 2. Wrap the right components in React.memo Not all of them. Only components that are expensive AND receive stable props. 3. Stabilise your functions with useCallback Without it - new function reference every render --> child always re-renders. Doesn't matter if you have React.memo. 4. useMemo for heavy calculations only Not for "this array map looks expensive." Only when Profiler proves it. The rule I follow now: Don't optimise what you haven't measured. One change in the right place beats 10 changes in the wrong ones. They all sound similar, but they solve different performance problems. Here’s the simple breakdown 👇 ⚛️ React.memo – Memoizes a component If the props don’t change, React skips re-rendering the component. 👉 Best when a component re-renders often but receives the same props most of the time. 🧠 useMemo – Memoizes a computed value It stores the result of an expensive calculation and only recomputes it when dependencies change. 👉 Useful for things like filtering, sorting, or heavy calculations. 🔁 useCallback – Memoizes a function Prevents a function from being recreated on every render. 👉 Especially helpful when passing callbacks to memoized child components. But here’s the important part 👇 🔹 React.memo → Optimizes component re-renders 🔹 useMemo → Optimizes expensive calculations 🔹 useCallback → Optimizes function references 💡 Adding them everywhere doesn’t automatically improve performance.
