Just shipped ZenZone — an immersive frontend portfolio showcase I built to push my animation skills to the limit. 🎬✨ Not a typical project. No CRUD, no backend. Just pure frontend craft. Here's what's inside: 🎥 Video zoom on scroll — GSAP-powered expansion that feels cinematic ✂️ Clip-path morphing — shapes that transition as you move through the page 📦 Scroll-triggered bento grid — images that expand as they enter the viewport 🃏 Animated card carousel — staggered fades with visual hierarchy ✍️ Split text + parallax — every word feels intentional Lighthouse scores: 🟢 Performance: 82 · 🟢 Best Practices: 100 · 🟢 SEO: 82 What I really learned: Getting smooth 60 FPS animations on the web is hard. GSAP's ScrollTrigger is powerful but unforgiving — one misplaced timeline and the whole sequence breaks. Spent a lot of time on React optimization and lazy loading to keep things buttery. A massive upgrade from my old portfolio to this:- looks much more premium, doesn't it? Instead of a typical static portfolio, I wanted something that feels more like a cinematic experience, something with a more "WOW" factor. ✨ Some things I built into it: • A frame-by-frame cinematic hero animation synchronized with scroll • A live GitHub activity timeline that resolves real commit messages via a two-stage API system • An AI-powered “Roast My Code” feature using Gemini AI • Glassmorphism UI with a consistent frosted-glass design system • Project descriptions with real metrics and performance impact ⚙️ Tech Stack Next.js (React 19) TypeScript Tailwind CSS v4 Custom requestAnimationFrame animation engine Next.js Server Actions & API Routes One of the most interesting parts was building the scroll animation engine. To maintain smooth motion at 60FPS, I avoided traditional React re-renders and instead used a requestAnimationFrame loop with direct canvas rendering, combined with scroll lerping and intelligent asset caching. This allowed the animation to stay smooth even during rapid scrolling. Built a fully interactive JavaScript Calculator with custom animations & DOM control Just wrapped up a frontend project where I pushed beyond basic functionality and focused on interaction, performance, and visual feedback. This wasn’t just about “does it calculate?” — it was about how it feels to use. 🧠 What I used under the hood: ⚡ querySelectorAll() to efficiently target and control multiple button elements at once 🎯 Clean DOM manipulation for handling inputs, operators, and live display updates 🎬 CSS @keyframes + animation timing to give button clicks smooth visual feedback ✨ Transition + animation layering to make interactions feel responsive and modern ⚙️ Event-driven logic using addEventListener to handle user input cleanly 🧩 Conditional logic for operator handling and edge cases ⚠️ I also experimented with dynamic expression evaluation using eval() for quick parsing — not production-safe, but useful for understanding how expression engines work under the hood before moving to safer parsing methods. 💡 Key takeaway: A calculator is simple on the surface, but once you start adding animation, state handling, and DOM optimization, it becomes a great exercise in how real frontend systems behave. Maximum effort? More like maximum timepass. I kept seeing this viral Deadpool website concept floating around Pinterest and finally decided to turn the static design into real code. I built this purely for fun over a casual coding session to stretch my UI and animation muscles. Translating the bold typography, the character layering, and the dark theme into the browser was a great mini-challenge. I spent 7 years working around a wall React Native built into itself. Every time I tried to animate a layout prop with useNativeDriver: true - width, height, flex, position - the framework threw it back at me. React Native 0.85 just tore that wall down. And it's bigger than just one fix. Layout props like width, height, flex, and position can finally be animated with the native driver. No workarounds. No compromises. 🔌 Multi-tool CDP connections - React Native DevTools, VS Code, and AI agents can now all connect simultaneously. No more sessions killing each other mid-debug. 📦 Jest Preset extracted - Moved to its own package for a leaner core and cleaner test setup. 🔍 Network panel restored on Android - Request body previews are back after a regression had silently disabled them. 604 commits. 58 contributors. Many developers still rely on custom CSS variables or even JavaScript to define scroll-driven animations, creating unnecessary complexity and brittle codebases. This often leads to animations that are hard to debug, poorly performant, and challenging to synchronize across different scroll containers. Historically, achieving robust scroll-driven effects meant juggling Intersection Observer APIs or custom scroll event listeners, then manipulating CSS properties with JavaScript. Even with early CSS `animation-timeline` drafts, developers had to declare a custom timeline name using `--scroll-timeline` (as seen in the old method example), which added an extra, often redundant, step. Ignoring the native `view()` timeline means your animations remain less declarative and potentially less optimized by the browser. You lose out on the built-in efficiency and simplicity of the platform's dedicated solution, leading to more code, more bugs, and a slower development experience. A product page loads. Beautiful UI, polished animations… but it takes 5 seconds to become usable. Why? Because we ship JavaScript for everything, even parts that never needed it. This is the inefficiency most frontend systems quietly carry. Now consider a different approach, popularized by Astro. Render the majority of the page as pure HTML on the server. No hydration. No client-side overhead. Then selectively activate only the components that truly require interactivity, search, filters, dynamic widgets. Nothing more. The impact is immediate, smaller bundles, faster time-to-interactive, and significantly better performance on constrained devices. This isn't just an optimization. It's a shift in thinking.
