Today I built a Color Scheme Generator from scratch using vanilla JavaScript. It connects to a real API, fetches live data, and displays a full color palette on the page. Small project. Big lesson. 🚀 Day 12 — Understanding useEffect in React Today I learned about one of the most important React hooks — useEffect. The useEffect hook is used to handle side effects in React components. Examples of side effects: • API calls • Data fetching • Event listeners • Timers • DOM updates Basic Syntax: useEffect(() => { // side effect code }, []) Important Points I learned: • useEffect runs after component renders • Empty dependency array → runs only once • With dependency → runs when value changes • No dependency → runs on every render Example: useEffect(() => { fetchUsers(); }, []); This hook is very useful when working with APIs and dynamic data. Most people don’t struggle with Next.js. They struggle with the layers under it. I’ve seen this pattern again and again. Someone jumps into Next.js because it’s trending. Then two weeks later, everything feels confusing. Routing feels random. Data fetching feels complicated. Even small layout issues feel like “framework problems.” But most of the time, it’s not the framework. It’s fundamentals. Before touching Next.js, get comfortable with: • Modern JavaScript • React basics • Thinking in components • Real HTML and CSS • Routing concepts • APIs • Git • Node environment basics React is the foundation. Next.js is an opinionated layer on top of it. If React feels unclear, the framework only adds noise. And here’s something most tutorials won’t tell you: When your CSS is weak, every layout issue feels like a “Next.js bug.” When APIs are unclear, data fetching feels scary. When Git is unfamiliar, real projects feel overwhelming. Frameworks aren’t hard. Stacking them on shaky basics is. Learn the basics once. Every framework after that becomes easier to pick up. Want to learn more about React hooks? I recently stumbled upon BigFrontEnd.dev and have been really enjoying it. I’ve been spending some time in the React section, which has exercises where you predict what gets printed to the console when using React hooks. It’s been a great way to better understand how state updates work, when React re-renders a component, and how closures can affect values inside hooks. They also have a solid JavaScript section. I started exploring those to get a better feel for what actually gets logged when you combine things like console.log, setTimeout, and Promises. It’s been helpful for reinforcing how JavaScript handles execution order and the event loop.
