I removed Express from my Node.js project. Then removed the http module too. Built everything from raw TCP and finally understood what was actually happening. Three things that clicked: → request.body is a stream, not a property Node reads your request in chunks. 🚀 Building a production-style backend, not a tutorial project. With 2 years of experience in backend development, I realized I had never built a personal project at all, yes, I do have the ones from my studies but nothing that reflects how I really work. This is why I decided to work on an inventory-api, REST API with Node.js, TypeScript, and Express Already running against a real MySQL database. Key highlights: ⚙️ Scalable architecture Route → Controller → Service → Repository Designed for maintainability and growth. 🔐 Production-like auth flow JWT, bcrypt hashing, protected routes. 📐 No duplication between validation & types Zod as a single source of truth. 🧪 Integration tests that matter (no mocks) → 201 success → 400 validation errors → 409 conflicts → 404 after soft delete What I care about as a backend developer: Not just what works, but why it's built this way. - Soft delete → preserves data & auditability. - app.ts vs server.ts → enables proper testing. - Zod → runtime guarantees, not just TypeScript types. I really started off thinking I should go with HTMX or Angular, but honestly, I missed writing React. It has been months since I started a React project. For the backend, I wanted to try something different than Express. Express isn't really being maintained anymore, and the only backends I have running in production for my projects are in Golang. So I wanted to try something with Node, specifically Node backend with SQL, because the only combo I have ever used since college is Express with Mongo. Fastify seemed familiar enough while still having new concepts worth exploring. I did go through the plugins system and turns out, everything in Fastify is a plugin. Your routes? A plugin. Your database connection? A plugin. And obviously, you can add custom plugins too. The general pattern is simple: create a plugin and register it with the Fastify instance. There is also an interesting scoping mechanism. For example, Service A in your codebase will have a scoped Fastify instance that is completely separate from Service B, unless you explicitly make something available at the global level, like your database client.

Why my API was slow (and what actually fixed it) I recently noticed one of my APIs was taking way too long to respond — sometimes 3–4 seconds per request. At first, I thought it was just my code being “messy,” but digging deeper taught me a lot. Here’s what I found: Too many unnecessary DB calls – I was fetching the same data multiple times instead of reusing it. Unoptimized queries – Some queries were scanning entire collections instead of using indexes. Synchronous loops – I was waiting for each call to finish one by one, instead of running them in parallel. After making a few changes: Added proper indexes Used Promise.all for parallel DB calls Cached repeated data where possible Response time went from 3–4 seconds → under 300ms. The biggest takeaway? Sometimes it’s not your code logic, it’s how your code talks to the database and handles tasks. 4 hours of debugging. Zero lines of "my" code changed. 🙃 We’ve all been there: An integration that has been rock-solid for months suddenly breaks. The clients are frustrated, the manager is asking for answers, and you’re staring at a log file that says… absolutely nothing. No errors. No warnings. After a deep-dive investigation, I found the culprit: The third-party service changed their response/request format without a single update to their documentation. The fix? I had to "blindly" map a new parameter from their response back into the request body. Suddenly, everything clicked. My takeaways: Logs aren't everything: Sometimes the "silent" changes are the deadliest. Docs are a contract: If you change the API, update the docs. Period. Claude Code Leak. I've been wrapping my head around something that confused me for a while as a developer. Earlier I used to create frontends with plain HTML/CSS/JS, make changes and directly push to prod. And it works. But a couple of weeks back when I moved to Vue.js, suddenly I had to run npm run build, zip the folder, upload it, unzip it... and I never fully understood WHY. I just did it for the sake of it, honestly. So today I went deep on it. Turns out the browser can't understand .vue single file components natively. So Vue needs a build step to compile everything into plain JS/CSS/HTML the browser can actually read. That led me to source maps — .map files generated during build that act as a translation dictionary between your minified production code and your original source. They're meant for internal debugging only. And then literally while I was learning this... The Anthropic Claude Code source map leak happened. 512,000 lines of proprietary TypeScript. Exposed. Because a single line was missing from .npmignore. Bun (which Claude Code is built on) generates source maps by default. No one added *.map to .npmignore. The .map file shipped with the npm package. Someone downloaded it, found a link to a zip archive on Anthropic's own cloud storage, and within hours the entire codebase was mirrored across GitHub. I was literally learning what source maps were TODAY when the news broke. So what can we learn From the Anthropic leak hopefully : A $19B company's proprietary codebase was exposed because of one missing line in a config file. No hacker, no sophisticated attack. Just *.map missing from .npmignore The small boring stuff — config files, .gitignore, .npmignore — matters as much as the fancy architecture Security is only as strong as your weakest release checklist item Owning our toolchain doesn't mean we understand it fully. Anthropic literally owned Bun, the runtime that had the bug that caused the leak. Sometimes the best way to learn is when theory and reality collide at the exact same moment.
