The highest-ROI thing I’ve done with GitHub Copilot takes about 5 minutes. I’ve been running Copilot at a few different clients now, and the single move that consistently levels up the experience is dead simple… add a copilot instructions file to your repo. It’s just a markdown file that defines your codebase, your team’s patterns and conventions, and gives the LLM the context it needs to stop guessing. Think of it like onboarding a new developer to your project, except it takes a fraction of the time and you only do it once. GitHub is even nice enough to give you an example prompt that’ll generate the entire thing. Took me maybe 5 minutes to get it dialed in, and it gets picked up regardless of what model each team member is running. Claude Code vs GitHub Copilot – My Experience as a Developer Over the past weekend, I’ve been exploring both Claude Code and GitHub Copilot to understand how they improve real-world development workflows — especially for Microservices projects.Added plugins for Github Copilot and Claude Code in Intellij Here’s my honest takeaway: 🔹 GitHub Copilot Excellent for inline code completion Speeds up boilerplate writing Great for unit test generation Works seamlessly inside IDE Best for day-to-day productivity boost 🔹 Claude Code Strong at large codebase understanding Better architectural reasoning Handles multi-file refactoring well Helpful for system design discussions Great for reviewing and improving production code 💡 My conclusion: Copilot feels like a fast coding assistant sitting beside you. Stop treating your GitHub Copilot like autocomplete. Treat it like a junior engineer that needs clear instructions. Most teams open Copilot, drop a file, and hope for the best. Then blame the AI when it generates mediocre code. The problem usually isn't Copilot. It's the lack of structured guidance. Here's how I'm making Copilot "the best dev on the team" by design: 1️⃣ Add a `.github/copilot-instructions.md` - Document your coding standards, architectural patterns, and "how things are done here." - Call out anti-patterns explicitly. - Include naming conventions, error handling patterns, and logging standards. - Update it as your codebase evolves. 2️⃣ Create context files (not entire repo dumps) - Link to core entrypoints and best implementations. - Include 1–2 "golden path" examples: tests, handlers, mappers. - Keep context focused—Copilot works better with curated signals, not noise. 3️⃣ Use specific, structured prompts - Instead of: "Write a function" - Use: "Write a function following [PATTERN], with error handling as shown in [FILE], and unit tests using [FRAMEWORK]." - Reference your actual code examples. 4️⃣ Maintain prompt templates per task type - `templates/add-endpoint.prompt` - `templates/add-tests.prompt` - `templates/refactor-class.prompt` - Reuse them across your team. 5️⃣ Review Copilot suggestions like code reviews - Read every suggestion before accepting. - Catch hallucinations early. - Give it feedback: "This violates [pattern], try again." - It learns (and improves) from context. I've recently been watching my teammate’s developer journey and she’s been diving deep into GitHub Copilot’s Agent Mode - it’s honestly inspiring to see how much it’s changing the way she builds, debugs, and ships code. She always saw Copilot as this helpful virtual pair programmer, but with Agent Mode, it’s like the AI has upgraded to a true collaborator. Instead of just suggesting code as she types, Copilot now interacts with her whole codebase - refactoring, running tests, even fixing bugs on command. It’s as if she’s got an AI teammate that understands the bigger picture and tackles larger tasks alongside her. What’s impressed her most is how Agent Mode slashes context switching. No more hopping between tools or doing endless research - instead, she can just articulate a goal (“Refactor this function for readability,” or “Find and fix every deprecated method usage”), and Copilot assembles a solution or drafts a PR for review. She’s using this with both Python and JavaScript projects and keeps telling me how real the time savings and creative boost are(she says C# and all the other languages are also great if that's what you prefer - even new languages like RUST). Letting Copilot handle the repetitive parts so she can focus on more interesting problems feels like a real glimpse into the future of development.
