Recently, I worked on a background removing tool — and it turned out to be way more than just integrating an API. The popular options like remove.bg charge per image once you pass the free tier. Not sustainable at scale. So I found rembg on GitHub — open-source, runs the U2-Net model locally, completely free. Wrapping it into a FastAPI service was the first challenge. Then came hosting. Tried Render.com's free tier — the model downloaded fine, then the server crashed. 512MB RAM isn't enough for an AI model. Moved to a VPS, got FastAPI running behind Nginx, and connected it to Laravel with a single HTTP call. That was it. Longer than expected. But the result is unlimited, self-hosted background removal with zero ongoing cost. Shipped v1.0 of Weftlyflow today. A self-hosted, Python-native workflow automation platform. Visual node-graph editor, 127 built-in nodes, AI agents as a first-class primitive, Fernet-encrypted credentials, three-layer sandbox for user code. One command to run it: docker compose up -d Apache 2.0. All original code. mypy --strict, 172 test files, FastAPI + Vue 3 + Vue Flow under the hood. One instruction file doesn't scale. The moment your codebase has a Python service and a TypeScript frontend and a Go worker, a single CLAUDE.md becomes either too generic to be useful or too bloated to trust. Scoped context solves this the way filesystems already do — by nesting. Org-level rules wrap user-level rules wrap project-level rules wrap directory-level rules. The agent reads whichever scope it's working inside, the same way a developer picks up conventions walking into a new folder. Example: the org says "never commit .env files." The project says "use Zod for validation." The ./src/api/ directory says "return JSON, validate schema." The agent sees all three, cleanly composed. The trade-off is discoverability. When rules live in four places, it's harder to answer "what does the agent actually see right now?" Good tooling here isn't optional — it's the whole pattern. Treat context as a tree, not a file. One pattern that changed how I build FastAPI backends: Stop returning raw database models from your endpoints. When your API response mirrors your ORM model 1:1, you're creating tight coupling between your database schema and your API contract. One schema change can break every client. The fix: dedicated Pydantic response models per endpoint. Here's what you get: 1. Auto-generated OpenAPI docs that actually match your responses 2. A clear data boundary - internal fields stay internal 3.
