Your homelab can give you real production experience, but only if something actually breaks. Mine did. ERR_TOO_MANY_REDIRECTS on my game app, right after a GitOps deploy. I had no real users, so there was no pressure, but when I saw the error, I panicked like the servers were on fire. Quick context: if you're early in your journey, ingress routes traffic inside your cluster, GitOps means changes deploy automatically from git commits. I pushed a change, it deployed, and immediately something broke. Two layers were both trying to fix the same thing, not knowing the other had already handled it. Cloudflare Tunnel had already terminated TLS at the edge and was passing requests into the cluster over HTTP internally. Argo CD saw HTTP and decided to redirect to HTTPS. Cloudflare forwarded that request. Argo CD redirected again. Same loop, forever. The question that cracked it for me was, what does each layer think the protocol is? I went layer by layer. Ingress logs. Forwarded headers. Where was the chain breaking? Eventually, I found it. Argo CD didn't know TLS was already handled upstream, so it kept correcting something that wasn't broken. One config change, and the loop is gone. I documented it, moved on to the next thing, and felt that quiet satisfaction you only get from actually tracing a problem to its root. That's the real value of a homelab, not the setup or the stack, but what happens when something breaks, and you actually trace it instead of restarting and hoping. The homelab is the environment. Been diving deep into retries lately, and it’s one of those things that seems small… until you realize it’s not. In real-world systems, things fail — APIs timeout, networks glitch, services hiccup. It’s not a matter of if, but when. Without a solid retry strategy, a single failure can cascade and bring your entire application down. That’s what clicked for me: retries aren’t just a “nice-to-have” — they’re a core part of building resilient, production-ready systems. Handled properly, they turn fragile code into something robust. Handled poorly (or ignored), they can quietly become the reason things break under pressure. Still learning the nuances — backoff strategies, when to retry vs when to fail fast — but it’s already clear this is one of those foundational concepts every engineer should understand. Chaos Engineering: I Deleted a Pod on Purpose. Here's What I Learned I deleted a running pod. On purpose. Not an accident. A test. kubectl delete pod backend-7d9f8b-xk2p9 Expected: The app keeps running. Traffic routes to the other replica. Reality (first attempt): The app went down. Why? I only had 1 replica. I thought I had high availability. My YAML said replicas: 1. High availability requires replicas: 2 minimum. That's chaos engineering in one sentence: You don't know what will break until you intentionally break it. After scaling to 2 replicas, I ran the same test: - Pod deleted - Kubernetes scheduled a replacement in ~15 seconds - Zero downtime. Zero user impact. The difference between 1 replica and 2: → 1 replica = single point of failure dressed up as a Kubernetes deployment → 2 replicas = actual redundancy What changed after this experiment: ✅ Added replica checks to deployment reviews ✅ Created runbooks for every failure mode discovered ✅ Started treating "what happens if this dies?" as a design question, not an afterthought You can't fix what you haven't broken in a controlled environment first.
