Have you ever written a “quick” SQL query… and then been scared to run it on production? I’ve had more of those moments than I’d like to admit. You start with something innocent: “Let me just check how many rows we’re dealing with.” 10 minutes later you’re: • joining 5 tables, • adding 3 window functions, • sneaking in a SELECT * “just to see everything”. Then your brain wakes up: “If I hit run right now and this goes wrong… am I about to lock this warehouse for everyone?” Early in my career, I treated queries like experiments. If it worked, great. If it didn’t, I’d just cancel and try again. But the more time I’ve spent in real systems, the more I’ve learned: The difference between “nice query” and “Friday night incident” is often one small habit. These are a few I’ve forced myself to build: • Always add a hard limit first (LIMIT 100) before I get fancy. • Start with a narrow WHERE clause, even if I relax it later. • Run it on a safe schema / smaller slice before touching the main one. • Ask: “If this turned into a full table scan, who would I ruin the day for?” None of this makes me look like a “10x” anything. But it does mean I ship fewer accidental outages in the name of “just exploring the data”. If you work in data, you’ve probably had your own “please don’t break prod” moment. I used to be confused about the GROUP BY and Window Functions. The mental model that clicked for me: GROUP BY summarizes. Window functions annotate. Here's a distinction that changes how you write queries. ◉ GROUP BY collapses rows: You want a summary (e.g., sum, agg,...) per group. It gives you one row per group. The original rows disappear. ◉ Window functions: Every original row remains, but now it carries the aggregation/computation (e.g., sum, min, row_number,...) as well. -- If you've ever written a GROUP BY and then joined the result back to the original table... Something I've been always adamant when working with data I wished I saw more of it here is this: Documenting queries. Pipelines change all the time; New columns show up; Business logic evolves; New people join the team. And suddenly… a query that made sense months ago is hard to understand. I had a joke with a previous colleague that when th code was made, just me and God knew what it was. Now that a few months has passed it's just God 😂 😂 Documenting doesn't have to be a big issue. A few small things go a long way: • Write a small summary of what the query is actually doing • Write where the data is coming from • Any tricky joins or specific business rules? Comment it • How key metrics are calculated? A small comment goes a long way Nothing fancy. Even a few lines at the top help a lot. Good documentation isn’t just for others. After 3 years working as a Data Professional, I’ve realized something simple: the difference between a junior and a mid-level isn’t always the model — it’s how fast and clean you can get the data ready. Most of us start with basic SELECTs, JOINs and GROUP BY. But once you’re in production, those won’t cut it.
