TypeScript with Node.js & Express: Learning Backend Development

Started TypeScript, and it turned out to be a really interesting learning experience. Covered both the basics of TypeScript and how it integrates with Node.js and Express in real-world backend development. Some of the key things I learned: -> Understanding TypeScript basics like types and syntax ->How GET and POST routes are implemented using NODE and Expressjs in TypeScript -> Creating a server in Node.js using the HTTP module -> Building a server using Express.js -> Learning the proper folder, file, and code structure of a Node/Express application It was interesting to see how TypeScript makes JavaScript development more structured and predictable. 🚀 Built Backend API using Node.js + TypeScript I’ve been learning backend development, and instead of just watching tutorials, I decided to build something practical — a simple Task Manager API. Here’s what I implemented: 🔹 Tech Stack Node.js (runtime) TypeScript (type safety) Express (API framework) 🔹 Features (REST API) Create a task → POST /tasks Get all tasks → GET /tasks Update a task → PUT /tasks/:id Delete a task → DELETE /tasks/:id 🔹 Example Data Structure type Task = { id: number; title: string; completed: boolean; }; 💡 Key Learnings: Why TypeScript matters in backend → It prevents runtime bugs by catching errors early Understanding REST APIs → Clear separation of routes and operations (CRUD) Working with Express middleware → Handling JSON requests using express.json() Realizing backend is just logic + structure → No magic, just clean organization ⚠️ Challenges I faced: Fixing package.json errors (JSON syntax is strict!) Backend Development Journey: Deep Dive into Node.js Async Patterns Over the past week, I’ve been intentionally building a strong foundation in Node.js backend development, focusing on asynchronous patterns and modern JavaScript workflows. So far, I’ve explored: Wrapping callback-based functions with Promises Using async/await for cleaner, readable asynchronous code Understanding the difference between synchronous and asynchronous execution Handling errors effectively with try/catch and Promise rejection The Event Loop, and how Node.js handles microtasks vs macrotasks A recent realization: Using resolve() vs return in Promises matters because async operations don’t provide results immediately, and Promises ensure the result is delivered once available. Working through these concepts has helped me deeply understand non-blocking execution, callback vs Promise patterns, and how Node.js manages tasks behind the scenes. Coming from a Java/Spring Boot background, this journey has strengthened my ability to write clean, efficient backend systems in the JavaScript ecosystem. I also applied best practices by excluding the node_modules folder from version control and relying on package.json to manage dependencies, ensuring a clean and reproducible project setup. 🚀 Documenting My Node.js Learning Journey Continuing my deep dive into Node.js for Backend Development, I explored some important concepts that are essential for building real-world APIs and server-side applications. Here are the topics I covered next: 🔹 NPM (Node Package Manager) Learned how Node.js projects manage external libraries using npm. Explored concepts like package.json, node_modules, dependencies vs devDependencies, npm scripts, and semantic versioning, which are fundamental for managing project packages efficiently. 🔹 Express.js Framework Studied how Express simplifies backend development compared to the basic Node.js HTTP module.
