Google's new File Search Tool for the Gemini API offers a managed RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation). That's great; they automated a complicated process that took me a weekend to build! 😅 The truth is, creating your own custom PDF Chatbot (RAG pipeline) is really quick and easy now. If you want the rewarding experience of building your own context engine, here's a process that takes hours, not weeks: 1. Chunk the PDF: Cut the document into manageable pieces using a RecursiveCharacterTextSplitter. 2. Embed with Gemini: Convert those chunks into numerical representations (vectors) using GoogleGenerativeAIEmbeddings (models/text-embedding-004). 3. Store in Qdrant: Place the vectors into a scalable QdrantVectorStore. 4. Retrieve & Ground: Locate the relevant chunks using similarity_search, then provide that context—and a strict SYSTEM_PROMPT—to Gemini 2.0 Flash to generate a grounded answer. 5. Ship It: Package everything in Streamlit. The stack includes LangChain, Qdrant, Streamlit, and the Gemini API. Building > Learning Over the past few days, I decided to move beyond endless tutorials and actually build something from scratch. The result — an AI Study Assistant that summarizes long text using open-source models. What I built: A web app that allows users to input long paragraphs and instantly get concise summaries — powered by Hugging Face’s facebook/bart-large-cnn model. Everything runs locally — no API keys, no paid access — just open-source AI and Flask. Tech Stack: Frontend: HTML, CSS, JavaScript Backend: Flask (Python) AI Model: Hugging Face Transformers Key Learnings: Connecting frontend and backend for real-time AI responses Debugging CORS and environment issues Efficient problem-solving using docs and AI tools Seeing how local models can replace paid APIs for prototypes This project pushed me beyond tutorials — I hit errors, version mismatches, and backend bugs, but learned to fix them using docs and AI tools.
