🚀 Just shipped my fully containerized ELK Stack monitoring project! I wanted to move beyond theory and really understand how production observability pipelines work. So I built one from scratch using Docker. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝘁𝘂𝗽: A 4-node Elasticsearch cluster (Elasticsearch 8.10.2) with dedicated roles: 1 Master node (cluster management) 1 Data node (stores the indices) 1 Ingest node (handles data pipelines) 1 Coordinating node (manages client requests) Kibana for beautiful visualizations Metricbeat collecting real-time host metrics (CPU, memory, disk, network) + per-container Docker metrics every 10 seconds Metrics are nicely separated into two daily indices: system-metrics-* and docker-metrics-*. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗜 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗲𝗱: This project taught me why we never put everything on a single Elasticsearch instance in real environments. Separating roles helped me see how Elasticsearch actually distributes workload efficiently — master for coordination, data for storage, ingest for processing, and coordinating for handling queries. It was eye-opening! I also got much better at Docker Compose, health checks, and ordering service startup so everything comes up reliably. 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 𝗜 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗱: - Configuring multi-node roles correctly and making sure nodes could discover each other - Setting proper memory limits and vm.max_map_count for Elasticsearch in Docker - Getting Metricbeat to collect Docker container metrics smoothly - Managing index templates and making sure data flowed into separate indices without issues It took some debugging, but solving these made the learning 10x better. Avoid Running as Root Always create and use a non-root user Example: RUN addgroup -S app && adduser -S app -G app USER app 4. Optimize Layer Caching Order instructions properly Copy only required files first (like package.json) Improves build speed significantly 5. Use .dockerignore Exclude unnecessary files (node_modules, .git, logs) Prevents sensitive data leakage 6. Keep Image Updated Regularly update base images Patch vulnerabilities frequently 7. Scan for Vulnerabilities Use tools like: Trivy,Docker Scout,Snyk Shift-left security approach 8. Limit Installed Packages Install only what's required Avoid using latest tag 9. Use Environment Variables Securely Never hardcode secrets in Dockerfile Use: AWS Secrets Manager, Hashi Corp Vault, Kubernetes Secrets 10. Health Checks & Metadata Add HEALTHCHECK to monitor container status Use labels for better traceability 11. Reduce Image Layers Combine commands using && Clean up caches in the same layer 12. Kubernetes tools finally start to make sense when you stop treating them as a “tool list”… and start seeing them as solutions to real problems. When you’re starting with Kubernetes, it feels overwhelming. There are hundreds of tools out there (literally 300+ in curated lists) — and everyone keeps saying “learn this, install that.” But in reality, you don’t learn Kubernetes tools first. You run into problems… then the tools appear. Here’s an easy way to think about it: --- 👉 You start with kubectl You deploy, debug, check logs… all from CLI. It works — but it gets repetitive and slow. 👉 So you look for better visibility You adopt tools like dashboards / terminal UIs (e.g., K9s, Lens) Now you can see everything happening in your cluster in real time. --- 👉 You deploy manually… and things drift What’s running in the cluster ≠ what’s in your Git repo 👉 So you move to GitOps (ArgoCD, Flux) Now Git becomes your single source of truth --- 👉 Your app doesn’t scale properly CPU is low, but your queue is overloaded 👉 So you adopt event-based autoscaling (KEDA) Scaling is now based on real workload, not just CPU --- 👉 Your pods can’t schedule (no capacity) 👉 So you bring in cluster autoscaling (Karpenter, Cluster Autoscaler) Infrastructure finally adapts to demand --- 👉 You realize… everything can talk to everything 😬 👉 So you implement Network Policies Security becomes intentional, not accidental --- 👉 You can’t debug performance issues 👉 So you add observability stack Metrics → Prometheus Dashboards → Grafana Tracing → Jaeger Now you can actually see what’s broken --- 💡 The biggest lesson (especially for beginners): Kubernetes tools are not a checklist. Just leveled up my CI/CD pipeline with SonarCloud integration — and it completely changed how I think about code quality. 🔍 Why SonarCloud matters (Quality Gate mindset) Before this, my pipeline only checked if the code runs. Now it checks if the code is actually production-ready. With SonarCloud: - ❌ Bugs are caught before deployment - 🔐 Security vulnerabilities are flagged early - 📊 Code coverage is enforced - 🚫 Bad code gets blocked automatically using Quality Gates 👉 It’s not just CI/CD anymore — it’s CI/CD with standards. --- ⚙️ How I integrated it into my pipeline I built a complete DevOps flow for my Flask app: 1. Push code to GitHub 2. Pipeline triggers automatically (GitHub Actions) 3. Install dependencies + run tests with coverage 4. SonarCloud performs: - Code analysis - Security scan - Quality Gate validation 5. If ✅ PASS → - Build with Docker - Deploy using Kubernetes - Serve via NGINX on AWS EC2 6. If ❌ FAIL → Deployment is blocked until issues are fixed --- 📈 What improved after integration Before: - Code deployed even with hidden bugs - No visibility into security issues - No test coverage tracking Now: - 🔥 Quality Gate ensures only clean code reaches production - 🛡️ Security issues are caught early (shift-left security) - 📊 Test coverage is measurable and enforced - ⚡ CI/CD pipeline is more reliable and production-grade --- 💡 Biggest realization: > “A working pipeline is not enough. We hit 93% Kubernetes conformance. In Rust. From scratch.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  Not a wrapper. Not a partial mock. A ground-up reimplementation of Kubernetes — API server, scheduler, controller manager, kubelet, kube-proxy — 216,000+ lines of Rust across 10 crates. 410 out of 441 official K8s conformance tests passing. 159 rounds of testing. 31 controllers. Real pods. Real services. Real networking. This started as "what if Kubernetes was written in Rust?" and became an actual cluster you can kubectl apply to.   The conformance suite doesn't care what language you wrote it in. It just checks: does your cluster behave like Kubernetes? 93% of the time, ours does.    Built with Claude Code as my engineering partner — analyzing K8s source, debugging watch protocol races at 2am, tracing client-go retry logic to find why kubectl explain couldn't find a CRD. AI didn't replace the architecture decisions, but it made a mass-scale project like this possible for a solo developer.                                                                                                                                    The remaining 7% is mostly macOS VM platform limitations (virtiofs permissions, missing kernel modules for NodePort routing) and controller timing. The part nobody shows you about DevOps: debugging. I spent days building a 3-tier banking application on AWS EKS. It worked. Then everything broke. Here are the real problems I hit and how I fixed each one 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺 1: Credentials exposed across 186 commits A terraform.tfvars file with real API keys had been committed months ago. Namecheap API key, DB credentials, everything exposed. >Fix: Used git-filter-repo to rewrite history and remove the file from all commits. Force-pushed the cleaned repo. Rotated every credential immediately. >Lesson: .gitignore does NOT protect you after a commit. Always remove tracked secrets with git rm --cached. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺 2: Terraform Helm provider losing cluster access After recreating the cluster, Terraform kept failing with: “Kubernetes cluster unreachable.” >Fix: Moved provider auth to root level using aws_eks_cluster data source. Added aws eks update-kubeconfig step. Introduced a delay after node creation to allow cluster readiness. >Lesson: Terraform providers don’t magically inherit context. Be explicit — especially with Kubernetes. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺 3: Backend stuck in CrashLoopBackOff The API kept crashing even though configs looked correct. Root cause: A hardcoded DigitalOcean DB URL was baked into the Docker image, environment variables were ignored. >Fix: Replaced values with Spring placeholders (${DB_HOST}, etc). Rebuilt and redeployed. >Lesson: Never hardcode environment-specific configs into images. Containers should be portable. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺 4: Database “Access denied” (3 different passwords 😄 ) GitHub Actions had one password. Kubernetes secret had another. RDS had a third. Nothing matched. >Fix: Reset DB password via AWS CLI. Updated Kubernetes secret. Synced via Argo CD. >Lesson: Have ONE source of truth for secrets. In real systems: use a secret manager, not scattered values. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺 5: 502 Bad Gateway (everything looked “healthy”) Pods were running. Services were correct. Still getting 502. >Root cause: Service was routing to port 3000, but container was listening on 80. >Fix: Updated targetPort → 80. Recreated service. >Lesson: When debugging 502s → check: kubectl get endpoints It tells the truth instantly. 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺 6: ECR blocking image updates Couldn’t push a new image with :latest. Reason: immutable tags were enabled. >Fix: Switched to versioned tags (v2, v3). Updated manifests. 𝗗𝗲𝘃𝗢𝗽𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀. It’s about: → reading logs → tracing failures → understanding systems end-to-end → fixing one issue without creating two more The app is live. The infrastructure has been destroyed (cost control 😄). The lessons are permanent. If you’re building in public, keep going. The debugging phase is where you actually become an engineer. Beyond the Code: Architecting a Hybrid-Cloud DevSecOps Pipeline I’m thrilled to share that I have successfully deployed my latest project—a professional Python microservice—live on an AWS EC2 instance using a custom, hybrid CI/CD architecture! Most projects stop at "it works on my machine." I wanted to build something that reflects real-world enterprise standards. This project wasn't just about writing Python; it was about orchestrating a secure, automated path from the first line of code to a live production server. The Technical Core Application: A high-performance FastAPI microservice with a modern, responsive dashboard styled via Tailwind CSS. The CI Layer (GitHub): Automated unit testing and linting using GitHub Actions to ensure every Pull Request is production-ready. The "Enterprise" Layer (GitLab): I configured a Self-Hosted GitLab Runner on an AWS EC2 instance to handle deep security analysis and Docker builds. Security & Quality: Integrated SonarQube as a mandatory Quality Gate, ensuring zero vulnerabilities and high code coverage before deployment. The AWS Deployment The final stage of the pipeline uses automated SSH-based deployment to manage a containerized environment on AWS. By using Docker-in-Docker (DinD) and secure secret management, the application is seamlessly updated without manual intervention. Key Lessons Learned: Self-Hosted Infrastructure: Configuring my own GitLab Runner on EC2 provided deep insights into Linux administration, Docker executors, and cloud networking. DevSecOps Integration: Security isn't a final step; it’s a constant. SonarQube taught me how to catch technical debt before it becomes a problem. Hybrid Orchestration: Learning to bridge GitHub and GitLab showed me how to design flexible, tool-agnostic workflows. A huge thank you to the community for the guidance during this build!
