While working on a MERN application in production, I noticed response times slowly degrading as usage increased. The issue wasn’t React. It wasn’t Node.js either. It came down to a small backend decision: returning more data than the client actually needed. The API was designed for flexibility early on, but as collections grew, unnecessary fields and unoptimized queries started adding up. The fix was straightforward: • Tightened MongoDB queries with proper projections • Added indexes based on real usage patterns • Simplified API responses to match UI needs The result: noticeably faster responses and reduced server load. The takeaway: performance issues often come from “harmless” decisions made early.
