🐛 A small bug wasted 3 hours of my time. I was building a React project. Everything looked correct. The API was working. The component was rendering. There were no errors in the console. But the UI was still not updating. For 3 hours, I kept checking the wrong things. Then I finally noticed the problem. I was directly mutating the state instead of creating a new one. Something as small as this: ❌ state.push(newItem) ✅ setState([...state, newItem]) And suddenly, everything started working. That moment reminded me of something important: In development, the biggest problems are often caused by the smallest mistakes. Since then, whenever something doesn’t work, I try to remember: • Don’t panic • Check the basics first • Read the code slowly • Small details matter Because debugging is not just about fixing bugs. 💡 Lesson Learned Today: While working on implementing search functionality in a React + Redux application, I faced an issue where the search input was updating correctly… but the results were not filtered at all 🤔 After debugging, I discovered an important insight: 👉 Not every “search issue” comes from the frontend. ✔️ The request was being sent correctly ✔️ The search parameter was included in the API call ❌ But the backend endpoint didn’t support filtering with that parameter 🔍 What I learned: Always verify: Is the correct parameter name being sent? Is the backend actually using it? Most React devs use hooks daily… But a lot of us are using them wrong (or at least inefficiently). Here are 5 React Hooks you're probably misusing 👇 1. useEffect: Doing too much If your useEffect looks like a mini backend service… that’s a red flag. 👉 Keep it focused: one responsibility per effect. 👉 Avoid unnecessary dependencies (or missing ones 😬). 2. useState: Over-fragmenting state Multiple useState calls for tightly related data = messy logic. 👉 Consider grouping related state into one object 👉 Or use useReducer for complex flows 3. useMemo: Premature optimization Not everything needs memoization. 👉 If your calculation is cheap, skip it 👉 Overusing useMemo can hurt readability more than it helps performance 4. useCallback: Blind usage Wrapping every function in useCallback ≠ optimization 👉 Only use it when passing functions to memoized components 👉 Otherwise, you're just adding complexity 5. useRef: Misunderstood power It’s not just for DOM access 👉 Great for persisting values without re-renders 👉 Perfect for timers, previous values, or mutable variables 💡 Rule of thumb: If you can’t clearly explain why you're using a hook… you probably don’t need it. There's a pattern in Node.js that most developers overlook early in their journey. Event Emitters. Here's the simplest way to understand it: One part of your app announces that something happened. Other parts listen and react — independently, without being directly connected. // Announce emitter.emit('user:registered', userData); // React — anywhere in your codebase emitter.on('user:registered', (user) => {  sendWelcomeEmail(user.email); }); The key thing to understand here: emit() is non-blocking. It doesn't wait for the listeners to finish. It registers the work on Node's event loop and moves on immediately. So your route finishes → response is sent to the user → listeners run in the background. Nothing is lost. Everything still executes. The user just doesn't wait for any of it. (Every React developer hits this at least once 👀) You write a simple useEffect(): useEffect(() => { console.log("API Called"); }, []); Expected: ✅ Runs once when component mounts Reality in development: ❌ Runs twice At first, it feels like a bug. But it’s actually React helping you. Here’s why: In React 18, Strict Mode intentionally runs effects twice in development to detect: • Side effects that aren’t properly cleaned up • Unsafe component behavior • Bugs that may appear in production later Think of it like a stress test for your code. Example: Without cleanup: API calls may duplicate Event listeners may stack Timers may keep running Better approach: ✔ Add cleanup functions ✔ Make effects idempotent ✔ Avoid unnecessary side effects Example: useEffect(() => { const timer = setInterval(() => { console.log("Running..."); }, 1000); return () => clearInterval(timer); }, []); Important: This double execution happens only in development mode, not production. Day 8 — Today my frontend talked to the outside world for the first time. Fetched real data from a public API. Rendered it on screen. It's genuinely exciting every time. async/await cleaned up my fetch code significantly compared to chaining .then() everywhere. But I also finally understood why promises exist — it's not just about syntax. The part most tutorials skip: error handling. What happens when the API is down? What does your UI show? I spent extra time making sure loading and error states were actually handled, not just happy path. Also tried Axios for the first time. The automatic JSON parsing and nicer error messages are worth it for bigger projects. Built a small app that shows GitHub user info by username. Feels like a real tool now. 🚀Day 2/200-Exploring Node.js Processes & Environment Variables Today I worked on understanding how parent and child processes behave in Node.js. 🔹 What I learned: A child process is a completely separate process, not a thread fork() creates a new Node process and runs the file automatically By default, environment variables are inherited from parent → child We can also inject custom env variables into the child process 🔹 Experiment: I created a custom variable (MY_VAR) that: ❌ Does not exist in the parent ✅ Exists only in the child process 🔹 Key Insight: Environment variables are process-specific, not global 🔹 Challenges I faced: Tried accessing process.env in the terminal (wrong context ❌) Confused between terminal vs Node runtime Debugging child process separately from parent 🔹 Solution: Used console.log and debugger inside child.js Understood the difference between system env vs process env 💡 This helped me clearly understand how Node.js handles processes internally. #NodeJS #BackendDevelopment #JavaScript #LearningInPublic #Debugging #WebDevelopment
