🚀 DevOps Diaries #Next — Backpressure: When Your System Can’t Keep Up Your system is designed to handle traffic… But what happens when traffic exceeds capacity? 👉 Requests start piling up 👉 Queues grow uncontrollably 👉 Latency increases 👉 Eventually… the system crashes I’ve seen production systems fail not because of bugs, but because they accepted more than they could handle. 🤔 What is Backpressure? Backpressure is a mechanism to control incoming traffic when a system is under heavy load. From what I have observed, abstraction in tech doesn't reduce complexity completely. It just moves complexity somewhere else. Take a simple example. DevOps was introduced to simplify deployments, standardize environments, and make systems more efficient. On paper, it works. But in reality, something interesting happens: - A developer writes code thinking in terms of logic, features, and business flow - A DevOps engineer looks at the same application in terms of infrastructure, scaling, and resource constraints Same system. Completely different mental models. This is where the leakage begins. Abstraction makes things easier to use, but it also hides constraints. And when constraints are hidden: - Developers assume things will “just work” - DevOps teams see issues that were never designed for - Debugging becomes slower - Ownership becomes unclear You don’t get less complexity. You get distributed confusion. So the problem is not “lack of communication”. It’s a mismatch of how each layer understands the system. A common instinct is to solve this by adding another role — someone who “bridges the gap”. But that often creates a bottleneck. Instead, the real solution is simpler (and harder): - Developers need partial visibility into infrastructure constraints - DevOps needs partial understanding of application behavior - Systems need better observability across layers Because in the end: Abstraction reduces cognitive load locally, but increases coordination cost globally. The more layers we add, the more important it becomes to understand: Not just how to use a system But how the system behaves underneath That’s where most production issues actually begin. Most DevOps mistakes aren’t technical — they’re decision mistakes. Early on, I thought faster deployments = better engineering. So I pushed for: • More automation • Fewer manual checks • Faster releases And it worked… until it didn’t. We started seeing: • Small bugs reaching production • Harder rollbacks • Less confidence in releases The issue wasn’t the tools. It was that I optimized for speed, without thinking enough about safety. What changed for me: I stopped asking 👉 “How do we deploy faster?” And started asking 👉 “What’s the right balance between speed and reliability for this system?” That led to better decisions: • Adding targeted checks instead of slowing everything down • Introducing staged rollouts instead of all-at-once releases • Making rollback strategies a first-class concern 💡 The biggest shift: DevOps isn’t about maximizing one metric. One pattern I keep noticing across teams is that everyone feels like they’re moving fast, but the numbers usually tell a different story. I once worked with a team that was genuinely proud of their release process. Good developers, smart people, and they actually cared about what they were building. But when we actually looked at the data, it was surprising. Deployment lead time was around 22 days, change failure rate close to 28%, and mean time to recover roughly 5 hours. No one expected those numbers. It wasn’t because they were doing a bad job. It was simply because no one had ever measured things properly. That’s the part about DevOps that doesn’t get talked about enough. It’s not really about tools. Not Kubernetes, not pipelines, not whatever is trending right now. It’s about making the invisible visible. How long does it actually take for a small change to reach a user? What really happens when something breaks at 2am? What does the team go through after a Friday deploy? Most teams don’t sit down and answer these honestly. And the gap between what they think is happening and what’s actually happening is usually where all the pain is. Not calling anyone out. I’ve been part of setups like this too.
