Can we bring wetlands to where they’re most needed?    Today in Johannesburg, the SUNCASA project launches the EcoFilter—a modular wetland to clean the Jukskei, track water quality, and provide water to women-run gardens. 📢 TODAY'S THE DAY! 📢 Today, in Johannesburg, the #SUNCASA Team alongside a small army of passionate, purpose-driven, place-based people and partners, launched our much anticipated EcoFilter system. Designed to function like a natural wetland, the system enables continuous water-quality monitoring of the Jukskei River, while simultaneously supplying water for the irrigation of women-led community gardens. It will also provide a platform for education and research. This exceptional accomplishment could not have been possible without the ingenuity, innovation, dedication and commitment of a whole host of partners. Promoting Environmental Awareness at Al-Maarif University Al-Maarif University recently delivered a live radio programme addressing key environmental issues and climate change challenges, highlighting sustainability, recycling, and community awareness. This activity is part of the project “Supporting Women’s Resilience to Climate Change through Technology and Education,” in collaboration with Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU) and funded by the British Council through the Going Global Partnerships programme. As Project Lead at Liverpool John Moores University, it’s encouraging to see the impact of our project “Supporting Women’s Resilience to Climate Change through Technology and Education” taking shape on the ground in Iraq , particularly through initiatives that promote environmental awareness and community engagement. The most powerful climate solutions aren't born in boardrooms - they're growing in community gardens, protected in forests, carried in ancestral knowledge, and led by women and girls on the frontlines. 🌱 Our partner Global Alliance For Green And Gender Action (GAGGA) is proving that locally-led, gender-transformative climate action does more than respond to crises; it builds resilience, restores ecosystems, and shifts power to those who need it most. By channeling resources directly to women-led community-based organizations, GAGGA helps ensure that those closest to climate impacts are also supported to shape the solutions. Despite evidence that community-led approaches deliver high impact per dollar spent, and recognition in frameworks like the Kunming-Montreal GBF, the Paris Agreement, and the SDGs, funding and decision-making remain concentrated with large international actors, bypassing local organizations doing the most essential work. GAGGA wants to change that, is doing so already. Are young people in Kenya truly shaping the country’s green and digital future—or are they being left behind? Kenya’s transition to a greener and more digital economy presents major opportunities—but only if young people are meaningfully included. With 75% of Kenya’s 47.6 million people under the age of 35, and youth accounting for more than 70% of the unemployed population, investing in youth participation, skills, and leadership has never been more important. The Sheria Ya Vijana project seeks to strengthen the capacity and voice of Kenyan civil society in promoting the social and economic inclusion of young people. The project will support youth—particularly in Nairobi and Kwale counties—to participate more actively in green and digital transitions through: • Youth-led capacity building and skills development • Increased participation in policy design and decision-making • Awareness raising and civic engagement • Support to youth-led civil society and non-profit organizations • Enterprise incubation and business development opportunities Sheria Ya Vijana aims to ensure that young people are not only beneficiaries of Kenya’s green and digital future but also active leaders in shaping it.
