Github Copilot policy has changed. It has become usage-based billing. Why it was inevitable? The answer lies within the email itself what we received on 27th April 2026. The higher compute and interference demand will cost more. we were so naive that we were expecting the cost will remain same for longer period of time. GitHub just changed the rules. And developers who push codes only from the terminal don’t even realize it yet. Starting April 24, GitHub will begin using Copilot interactions to train its AI models (except enterprise users). Yes… that includes: • your prompts • accepted / rejected code • how you edit suggestions • potentially context from your repos Even private ones indirectly. Dont worry it is easy to turn it off. 1. GitHub Copilot is changing how Pro and Pro+ plans are billed starting June 1. The US$10 and US$39 monthly fees stay the same, but they will now work as monthly AI credits based on actual usage. • New model: billing based on input, output, and cache tokens. • Code Review: in addition to AI credits, it will also consume GitHub Actions minutes. • Autocomplete: remains included in the plan, with no credit usage. • Next Edit Suggestions: also remains included, with no credit usage. • End of fallback: once the limit is reached, there will be no fallback experience.
