As DevOps Engineer, I see daily how daunting this field can be. You are expected to be an expert in every single layer of that map, from Linux at the bottom to GitOps at the top. In 2026, we are expected to be experts in: 🐧 Linux & Shell Scripting 🐍 Python & Automation ☁️ Cloud Architecture (AWS/Azure/GCP) 🛡️ Security & Compliance 🏗️ IaC, CI/CD, Monitoring... the list grows every year. The result? Permanent Imposter Syndrome. We feel like we are falling "behind" if we haven't mastered a new tool by weekend. But here’s the reality: You can't memorize the map. You just need to know how to navigate it. I realized that the "Experts" aren't the ones with every logo memorized. They are the ones who understand the logic—the Networking, Security, and Logic that bridges those layers. 🎓 My 2026 Strategy: Stop trying to learn 50 new tools. Master the core principles that drive them all. The transition from "Manual Operator" to "DevOps Architect" happens when you stop memorizing icons and start understanding Architectural Patterns. 🚀 To my fellow engineers: If you feel overwhelmed, you’re doing it right. # I've been containerizing apps and deploying them on EKS as part of my projects. And honestly? The mistakes I ran into taught me way more than the documentation ever did. Here are 3 mistakes I hit while working on EKS — and what I learned from each: #Mistake_1 — Not setting resource limits on Pods: One greedy container quietly consumed all the node's memory. Other Pods started crashing, and I had no idea why. Took me way too long to connect the dots. Kubernetes won't protect your cluster if you don't define boundaries yourself. → Set CPU and memory requests + limits on every container. No exceptions. #Mistake_2 — Baking config directly into the Docker image: I hardcoded environment variables right inside the image. Every tiny config change meant a full rebuild and re-push to ECR. Once I properly used ConfigMaps and Secrets, deployments became 10x faster and cleaner. → Your image should be environment-agnostic. Let Kubernetes handle the config. #Mistake_3 — Skipping liveness and readiness probes: My app container was "running" in EKS but not actually serving requests. Traffic kept hitting a broken Pod because Kubernetes had no way to know it was unhealthy. The moment I added proper probes, the cluster started self-healing exactly like it's supposed to. → Probes are how EKS knows your app is truly ready — don't skip them. Working on real projects — even outside of a job — is where the actual learning happens. These mistakes cost me time in my lab. In production, they'd cost a team much more. After spending 10+ years in DevOps, SRE, and Cloud Engineering, I’ve worked with multiple languages and tools, but Golang (Go) is one that genuinely changed how I approach building and scaling systems. Earlier in my career, I relied heavily on Bash, Python, and configuration management tools for automation. They worked well for a while, but as systems grew more complex and distributed, I started noticing challenges around performance, concurrency, and long-term maintainability. That’s when I started using Go more seriously. One of the biggest advantages I noticed was performance. Go produces lightweight, fast binaries that are well-suited for production environments. When you're dealing with large-scale infrastructure, efficiency becomes critical. Another major benefit is its concurrency model. Managing parallel tasks like API calls, monitoring checks, and deployment workflows became much simpler and cleaner compared to traditional approaches. It also helped me better understand the ecosystem we use daily. Many core DevOps tools like Kubernetes, Docker, and Terraform are built using Go, and knowing the language provides a deeper perspective on how these systems actually work. Over time, I began using Go to build internal tools, automation scripts, and small services that are reliable and easy to maintain. Its simplicity encourages writing clean and readable code, which is essential in complex DevOps environments. For anyone working in DevOps, especially at a mid to senior level, learning Go can be a strong addition to your skillset. It shifts your mindset from just using tools to building scalable and efficient solutions. Most DevOps engineers know HOW to use Kubernetes. Very few know WHY pods fail. 👀 Here are the 5 most common pod failure states and exactly how to debug them: 🟥 1. CrashLoopBackOff What it means: Pod starts, crashes, restarts, repeats How to debug: → kubectl logs <pod-name> --previous → kubectl describe pod <pod-name> Usual suspects: App crash, wrong env variables, missing config 🟡 2. ImagePullBackOff What it means: Kubernetes can't pull the container image How to debug: → Wrong image name or tag? → Private registry? Check imagePullSecrets → kubectl describe pod → look at Events section Usual suspects: Typo in image name, expired credentials 🔵 3. Pending What it means: Pod is waiting, never starts How to debug: → kubectl describe pod → check "Insufficient CPU/Memory" → kubectl get nodes → is the node even Ready? Usual suspects: Not enough resources, node selector mismatch, taint/toleration issues 🟠 4. OOMKilled What it means: Pod used more memory than its limit How to debug: → kubectl describe pod → look for "OOMKilled" in Last State → Check memory limits in your deployment YAML Usual suspects: Memory leak in app, limits set too low ⚪ 5. Terminating (Stuck) What it means: Pod won't die gracefully How to debug: → kubectl delete pod <pod-name> --grace-period=0 --force → Check if finalizers are blocking deletion Usual suspects: Finalizers not cleared, node is unresponsive The ONE command every DevOps engineer must memorize: 💡 kubectl describe pod <pod-name> It tells you EVERYTHING.
