Why “Boring” C Code Saves the Day 🔋 We live in an era of “Vibe Coding,” where AI assistants and high level abstractions make everything look easy. But when you are dealing with High Voltage systems, Li-Ion chemistry, and grid scale energy storage, you cannot rely on “vibes.” You need physics, determinism, and robust C code. I have been on the “Hard Times” side of this cycle. Building Turkey’s first national Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) taught me one fundamental lesson: When a 150 kW system is powering a live international concert (like Jennifer Lopez’s) or stabilizing the grid, there is zero tolerance for runtime errors, undefined behavior, or garbage collection pauses. We wrote the “boring,” strict, table driven C firmware so that end users could enjoy the “Good Times” of uninterrupted power. Strong engineering is not about using the newest shiny framework. In full-stack work: • Progress is visible (UI, APIs, features) • Feedback is immediate • The product drives decisions In Python-heavy projects: • Most progress is invisible • You spend more time exploring data than shipping features • Debugging means questioning assumptions, not just code The hardest adjustments for me: • Letting go of UI-first thinking • Measuring progress without a frontend • Treating scripts as systems, not throwaway code What helped: Thinking in terms of inputs, outputs, and guarantees — not files and functions.
