A production bug taught me more than 100 LeetCode problems. We had a release coming up. Everything looked fine… until it didn’t. The app started crashing after a few hours of usage. No obvious error. No clear pattern. Just random crashes in production like testing. At first, I did what most of us do: → Added more logs → Tried quick fixes → Hoped it would go away It didn’t. So I stepped back and asked: “When exactly is this breaking?” That changed everything. I found: • Multiple triggers firing the same logic • Background tasks running unnecessarily • System getting overloaded over time The fix? Not more code. LESS code. → Removed redundant triggers → Controlled when logic should run → Avoided unnecessary work Result: • Crashes gone • Stable release • Cleaner code That’s when it clicked: Good engineering is not about writing more code. You open a file to fix one bug. You leave having fixed two. 🐛🐛 That's not heroic. That's just how it's supposed to work. Every file I touch, I try to leave a little better than I found it. This is known as the boyscout rule. In my opinion one of the best ways to improve code quality over time. The variable name that made sense two years ago but confuses everyone now. The commented-out code nobody dares to remove. The helper function that should exist but doesn't. I don't put them in a backlog. I fix them as I go, one small step at a time. The boyscout rule is not about heroics. It's about improving code quality over time, increasing velocity in the future. If every developer on a team did this, the codebase would slowly improve without anyone having to stop and specifically work on "code quality." Ever faced a bug that only exists in production? 👀 Recently, I ran into one that was both subtle and humbling. We had a piece of code using a static variable: "public static string xyz;" Everything worked perfectly in development. No errors, no unexpected behavior. But in production — where multiple threads were executing simultaneously — things started getting weird. Different threads were overwriting the same shared "xyz" value. One request would set it, another would unknowingly change it, and suddenly users were seeing inconsistent data. Classic case of: 👉 Shared state + concurrency = unpredictable chaos The tricky part? You’ll almost never catch this in a local or single-threaded dev environment. It only reveals itself under real-world load. Lesson learned: Be extremely cautious with "static" variables in multi-threaded applications. Avoid shared mutable state unless it’s properly synchronized. i hired this developer once. he knew some coding, but kept making so many mistakes. i kept coaching him on a lot of practices, fundamentals, but he kept adding code as if its a college prototype without thinking and then some days; he would be brilliant, i would think he is smarter than me. but then I caught him one day trying to delete and recreate prod tokens table. when asked won't the tokens be lost, he says oh yeah! good catch. let me fix that. if claude was in your team, would he be fired by now or not?

Even when your mental state is low or you’re not fully in it, consistency still matters. You don’t need to build a full feature, just make progress. Write a function, fix a bug, or push a small commit. What matters is showing up daily and keeping your codebase alive. Real developers don’t wait for perfect moments, they keep shipping anyway.

In the last few weeks, several people have hit me up asking for help debugging projects they vibe coded. When I ask them for details about their plan, the answer is usually some version of: "I don't know, I just started asking for what I wanted to get something done fast." Hot take (I know, I hate this phrase too): that's not fast. That's faster at creating problems. People are leaning into vibe coding with the idea that planning is somehow a bureaucratic relic standing between them and shipping. It really isn't. Planing is still how you understand how to translate your idea into what you need to build. You don't have understanding everything in detail. But you do need a plan. That's where the understanding comes from. When you skip it, you're not moving fast, you're just deferring the cost. And when you try to move to production that debt will be collected with interest. Sure, it's fine to vibe code in a sandbox, but you can't carry that same energy into a live system serving real users.

Don’t be scared. We know developers who understand Assembly better than most programmers. In the same way, developers who know what’s happening behind the scenes will always outperform every vibe coder.
