Really interesting #TargetingAI podcast featuring IBM’s Bruno Aziza, who shared what IBM is seeing in customer engagements around AI.   What stood out to me was the need for customization and collaboration, building AI that works across multiple clouds, and integrates with core enterprise systems. Tech in history by Roberto Capodieci IBM Announces the First Commercial Hard Disk Drive On September 14, 1956, IBM announced the IBM 350 Disk Storage Unit, marking a pivotal moment in computing history as the first commercially available hard disk drive. Developed under the leadership of Reynold B. Johnson, this breakthrough was integrated into the IBM 305 RAMAC (Random Access Method of Accounting and Control) computer, designed to handle real-time data processing for large organizations. The device itself was enormous, weighing over a ton and requiring a forklift to move, yet it represented a quantum leap from punch cards and tape storage. With 50 magnetic disks spinning at 1,200 RPM, it could store approximately 5 million 6-bit characters, equivalent to about 3.75 MB by today's standards, allowing random access to data in milliseconds rather than minutes. This speed transformed inventory management, payroll, and reservations systems, particularly for industries like aviation where United Airlines became an early adopter. Politically, the RAMAC's development occurred amid the U.S. government's push for technological superiority during the early Cold War. IBM's collaboration with military and federal agencies underscored how tech innovations were intertwined with national security, as faster data processing supported everything from missile guidance simulations to economic planning. The project's $500,000 lease price (about $5 million today) highlighted its role in empowering big business and government, foreshadowing the data-driven economy. Despite its success, the RAMAC wasn't without quirks, early units suffered from dust contamination issues, requiring climate-controlled rooms. However, it spurred a wave of storage advancements, shrinking sizes and boosting capacities exponentially over decades, directly influencing modern SSDs and cloud storage. IBM's patent dominance here also sparked antitrust scrutiny, illustrating the tech-politics nexus where innovation bred market power debates. This milestone not only shaped hardware evolution but also made nerds grin at the sheer audacity of cramming data onto spinning metal, proving that big ideas start with bulky prototypes. AI Leadership I was impressed by Microsoft Vice Chair Brad Smith's recent testimony before the Senate Commerce Committee on AI. His strategic vision outlines three critical imperatives for American leadership: 1) Win the AI innovation race by building world-class infrastructure Brad highlights the urgent need for "massive datacenters and AI infrastructure" supported by modernized electrical grids. This physical foundation, combined with recruiting specialized skilled labor like electricians and pipefitters, creates the backbone for innovation. As organizations plan their AI strategy, this infrastructure consideration must be central. 2) Accelerate AI diffusion through comprehensive workforce development His emphasis on "AI skilling of the American workforce" resonated deeply with me. Brad advocates for AI fluency beginning in schools, specialized training in community colleges, and advanced education in university programs. This multi-tiered approach ensures we're developing talent at all levels—from basic AI literacy to sophisticated technical expertise. 3) Build strategic alliances by exporting AI responsibly Brad wisely notes that "no company or country is so powerful that it can master the future of AI without friends." This collaborative mindset is essential as we balance security concerns with the need for international partnership.
