It is good to see Oklahoma’s State Chamber of Commerce taking a strong stand on the issue of Oklahoma’s lack of competitiveness due to our poor educational outcomes. Yesterday, the state chamber unveiled a program to address this important issue. The question is, will we stick to it and will the chamber demand that our legislators, lawmakers, policymakers and educational leaders step up and make it happen. And, will our communities within the state demand the same progress? It’s time to get honest: if our kids can’t read, our state can’t compete. We’re 49th in reading and 50th in math. That’s not “fine”—that’s a crisis. Mississippi stuck with real literacy reform and shot up to 7th in the nation. If it worked there, it’ll work here—if we quit backing down. But to do that, it will demand accountability on the legislative level for sure, and also on the educational level. And voters have a say in this too. That means no more electing ideological idiots like Ryan Walters to lead state educational initiatives. We should be laser-focused on three things: • 100% third-grade reading proficiency • Smaller K–3 class sizes • Real growth in high-skill jobs Our kids deserve better. Our economy depends on it. Let’s stop making excuses and fix this.
