As of January 2026, the React/Next.js "React2Shell" (CVE-2025-55182) vulnerability remains under active, widespread exploitation by various threat actors, including state-sponsored groups and opportunistic cybercriminals. The initial patch from December 2025 is effective, but many systems remain unpatched, leading to continued compromises. Current Status (January 2026) ====================== Active Exploitation: The vulnerability is being actively and aggressively exploited at a sustained, elevated pace, with automated scanning and attack attempts ongoing across the globe. Threat Actors: Both state-nexus groups (including China-nexus and North Korean actors) and financially motivated cybercriminals (deploying cryptominers and botnets) are leveraging the flaw. CISA KEV Listing: The vulnerability was added to the CISA Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) Catalog - https://lnkd.in/gFSQRmF9 on December 5, 2025, due to evidence of active exploitation, mandating remediation for U.S. federal agencies. Post-Exploitation Activity: Observed attacks include the deployment of remote access trojans (RATs), backdoors, cryptominers, and scripts designed to harvest cloud credentials (AWS, Azure, GCP) and sensitive data. Action Required: ============= Immediate updates are necessary to mitigate the severe risk posed by this unauthenticated Remote Code Execution (RCE) flaw, which has a critical CVSS score of 10.0. Update React and Next.js: Ensure all instances of vulnerable React Server Components (RSC) packages and Next.js applications using the App Router are updated to the patched versions. Vulnerable Versions: React versions - 19.0, 19.1.0, 19.1.1, and 19.2.0 are affected. Patched Versions: React: Upgrade to at least - 19.0.1, 19.1.2, or 19.2.1 (or later) to prevent RCE. Next.js: Upgrade to the latest patched releases within your major version line (e.g:- 15.0.5, 15.1.9, 15.2.6, 15.3.6, 15.4.8, 15.5.7, 16.0.7). Check for Compromise: After applying mitigations, check for signs of potential compromise on all internet-accessible React instances.
