Chai Discovery, an artificial intelligence company, has secured 70 million dollars in new funding. This investment values the two-year-old startup at approximately 550 million dollars. The funding round was led by Menlo Ventures and included participation from DST Global Partners, Yosemite, Thrive Capital, and OpenAI. The company focuses on accelerating drug discovery using its AI technology. Its primary tool, an AI model named Chai-2, designs new antibodies completely from computer models. The goal is to create molecules that can precisely bind to proteins that cause disease. This method has shown a success rate of over 15 percent in early tests, where the designed antibodies successfully bound to their intended protein targets. This is a significant improvement compared to the estimated 0.1 percent hit rate for previous AI methods and the 1-in-1,000 chance common in traditional lab-based screening. In one instance, Chai-2 produced a validated result for a difficult target in just two weeks, a task that had previously taken another group over three years and 5 million dollars. To guide its strategy, the company has added Dr. Mikael Dolsten, the former Chief Scientific Officer of Pfizer, to its board of directors. Chai Discovery, led by co-founder and CEO Joshua Meier, plans to commercialize its technology by forming partnerships with established pharmaceutical companies, offering them a more efficient, digital approach to creating new medicines.
