As I continue exploring the International Coaching Federation ACC Minimum Skills Requirements (2025) versus the 2022 version, I’m more and more impressed by how precisely the new document describes how coaching actually feels when it’s client-centered. One area that stood out for me this week is Competency 7: Evokes Awareness. In the 2022 version, a coach would fail if most of their questions were “leading or contained pre-determined answers.” That already highlighted the risk of directing the client’s thinking, but the 2025 version goes further, adding two subtle yet powerful refinements: -“The coach does not allow sufficient space for the client to consider and respond to a question before asking another.” This directly calls out what we often call machine-gun questioning, a habit that can leave clients chasing the coach’s pace rather than their own insight. -“The coach’s way of speaking is complex or confusing to the client.” I’m particularly happy to see this one. Too often, I’ve heard well-intentioned coaches use phrases like “Who are you being when…?” or other bits of coaching jargon that sound profound but may disconnect the client from their own language and experience. This update reminds me that clarity is presence. A small reflection exercise: After a session, listen back and note two moments: When your question invited space and clarity. When your language might have added confusion or pressure. That simple awareness can transform your coaching conversations. I’m finding that each of these updates invites us to refine not just our technique, but our way of being with the client. Much of today’s conversation focuses on the “risk” of inclusion. The greater risk is something else entirely: Organizational fragility. Organizations that cannot engage difference, dissent, or complexity tend to: ➡️ centralize decisions too narrowly ➡️ overlook blind spots ➡️ struggle under rapid change Inclusive leadership, at its core, is a risk-management capability. It broadens perspective, improves decision quality, and increases adaptability. This is not ideological. It is operational. The ICF credential is more than just letters after your name. It enhances your credibility and builds trust among coaching clients, giving you an edge in your career. Earning an ICF credential is a pledge to uphold the highest level of professionalism, ethical standards, and continuous development. It’s recognized and respected by coaching clients worldwide. Part of attaining your ACC is 10 hours of mentor coaching.  Being able to join a mentor program at the start of your ACC journey is beneficial because it will guide you through the entire credentialing process and set you up for success.  It can be daunting, so having a mentor coach to help you through the process can get you to the finish line much quicker. This mentoring program begins October 6, 2025 and spans 3 months (with a break over the holidays), includes 7 hours of group mentoring plus 3 hours of individual (one-to-one) mentoring and meets ICF's Mentor Coaching Requirements. Not all support is the same. And knowing what kind of support you need is, in itself, a kind of leadership. Too often, we lump together roles that are fundamentally different. But the difference between a coach, a mentor, an advisor, and a consultant isn’t just semantics. It’s about intention. It’s about where the insight comes from, who holds the authority, and what the relationship is designed to unlock. 𝙲̲𝚘̲𝚗̲𝚜̲𝚞̲𝚕̲𝚝̲𝚒̲𝚗̲𝚐̲: 𝚃̲𝚑̲𝚎̲ 𝙴̲𝚡̲𝚙̲𝚎̲𝚛̲𝚝̲ 𝚂̲𝚘̲𝚕̲𝚞̲𝚝̲𝚒̲𝚘̲𝚗̲ A consultant is brought in to solve a problem. They diagnose, prescribe, and often implement. You hire them for their expertise in a particular area: strategy, operations, technology, finance, and expect them to deliver a plan. The emphasis is on 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐰𝐞𝐫. The consultant holds the knowledge. The client is the recipient. 𝙰̲𝚍̲𝚟̲𝚒̲𝚜̲𝚒̲𝚗̲𝚐̲: 𝚃̲𝚑̲𝚎̲ 𝚃̲𝚛̲𝚞̲𝚜̲𝚝̲𝚎̲𝚍̲ 𝚁̲𝚎̲𝚌̲𝚘̲𝚖̲𝚖̲𝚎̲𝚗̲𝚍̲𝚊̲𝚝̲𝚒̲𝚘̲𝚗̲ An advisor offers guidance based on specialized knowledge or experience. They may not do the work for you, but they help you think through options, risks, and decisions. You lean on their judgment because they’ve seen this terrain before. The emphasis is on 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧. You still make the final call, but the advisor helps shape your thinking. 𝙼̲𝚎̲𝚗̲𝚝̲𝚘̲𝚛̲𝚒̲𝚗̲𝚐̲: 𝚃̲𝚑̲𝚎̲ 𝚂̲𝚎̲𝚊̲𝚜̲𝚘̲𝚗̲𝚎̲𝚍̲ 𝙿̲𝚎̲𝚛̲𝚜̲𝚙̲𝚎̲𝚌̲𝚝̲𝚒̲𝚟̲𝚎̲ A mentor brings personal experience and offers insight from having walked a similar path. It’s relational, not transactional. Mentoring is often informal, built on trust, and rooted in storytelling, perspective-sharing, and the long view. The mentor says, Here’s what worked for me. Here’s what I learned. It’s less about solutions and more about 𝐫𝐞𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭. 𝙲̲𝚘̲𝚊̲𝚌̲𝚑̲𝚒̲𝚗̲𝚐̲: 𝚃̲𝚑̲𝚎̲ 𝙼̲𝚒̲𝚛̲𝚛̲𝚘̲𝚛̲ 𝚏̲𝚘̲𝚛̲ 𝙸̲𝚗̲𝚗̲𝚎̲𝚛̲ 𝙲̲𝚕̲𝚊̲𝚛̲𝚒̲𝚝̲𝚢̲ Coaching is a different kind of partnership. It’s not about giving you answers. It’s about helping you find your own. A coach doesn’t lead with advice or direction. They hold space. Ask deep questions. Offer frameworks for reflection. And they challenge you to return to your own values, insight, and authority. The coach assumes you 𝐚𝐥𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐲 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐰𝐢𝐬𝐝𝐨𝐦.
