Now accepting proposals —> The Center for Health, Energy, and Environmental Research (CHEER) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison has announced a new cycle of its grant research awards competition! CHEER supports research related to energy, transportation, land use and infrastructure choices and policies to understand the potential benefits for human health, with a focus on community-relevant solutions and near-term health benefits. They are looking to support pilot grants that build capacity for research and community partners to develop the skills, connections, and research agendas to fund continued collaboration, while simultaneously building knowledge to support effective choices and policy-making that prioritize health. According to CIRCLE - The Center for Information & Research on Civic Learning and Engagement, many rural youth live in civic deserts with limited access to civic learning or civic engagement opportunities. Civics Unplugged is working to close the gap. Our newest full-time team member, and oldest CU alum, Zoë Jenkins of Lexington, Kentucky has joined the CU team as our Director of Civic Trust and Recruitment to lead our work sparking civic innovation and engagement in rural states. Under her leadership, we are investing in students from civic deserts and equipping them with high-quality training, resources, mentorship, and civic career opportunities. Since we started this initiative, we have seen a 400% (!!!) increase in applications from Alaska, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, Oklahoma, Iowa, and Nebraska. From our regional ambassadors conducting targeted outreach and leading workshops to building local relationships, we are bringing in more impact-ready young civic leaders from under-invested states. Through our Civic Innovators Fellowship, Civics Unplugged is helping youth build the homegrown infrastructure they need to sustain their own civic communities. We're not just manufacturing film- we're creating solutions to real-world problems that have a lasting impact on birds and built environments. A Baltimore City Recreation & Parks facility managed by Cylburn Arboretum Friends experienced as many as 10 bird strikes daily during migration season, but struggled to find funding for strike prevention solutions. Their all-glass facade was also experiencing extreme solar heat in the summer. Our Solyx BSF-DB35 Solar Bird Safety Film is the only bird safety film offering solar heat-rejecting properties, creating a line item in the park's budget for bird safety film.
