Good idea. Now make it count. The Advanced Capability Investment Fund can be a genuine step forward, but only if it drives fast outcomes, not slow process. Why Grok, Perplexity, & OpenAI Should Visit the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Today’s mobile bandwidth is inadequate for AI to reach its potential. This analysis explores why the technical demands, scalability challenges, and emerging AI innovations necessitate higher data capacity. FCC Chairman Brendan Carr’s recent push to auction more spectrum is both prescient and essential for U.S. leadership in AI. It also presents a unique opportunity for AI-first companies to control their mobile destiny, no longer operating in the shadows of Apple and Google. Evolving AI Use Cases  Today’s mobile AI is lightweight: text (~10 KB), voice (~500 KB). However, new use cases are data-hungry. Multi-modal AI (text, voice, sensors) often requires 1–5 Mbps. Real-time translation, AI agents syncing daily habits, and federated learning can each require tens of megabytes daily, pushing 4G and early 5G to their limits and demanding a wider spectrum for consistent 500 Mbps–1 Gbps. Scalability & Network Congestion A single AI query is manageable, but millions at once can overwhelm networks. Ten million users at 1 MB per query results in 10 terabytes of traffic, which is far beyond what 4G or early 5G can handle. Background tasks such as predictive caching and model updates further multiply these demands. Latency Sensitivity AI thrives on instant response. The latency of 4G ranges from 30 to 50 ms but can spike to 100 ms in crowded areas, causing lag. 5G edge computing reduces this to 5 to 10 ms, but it requires high-bandwidth backhaul. New spectrum, specifically mmWave at 28 GHz, is critical for achieving seamless, low-latency AI. Future-Proofing Today’s AI fits current bandwidth, but future applications will not. AR overlays require 10–50 Mbps. Federated learning synchronizes 10–100 MB per update. Devices designed for human use cannot accommodate AI’s machine-to-machine future. The new spectrum (AWS-3, mmWave) can scale from 5G to 10–100 Gbps per site, enabling pervasive AI. Conclusion We can learn a lot from history. How did powerful companies like AT&T and Verizon lose control of their businesses? They owned the spectrum, device specifications, customers, and the FCC. The answer is that they were outmaneuvered by Apple and Google in 2008. Apple’s iPhone and Google’s spectrum auction bid for open devices and open applications broke the carrier stranglehold. That was 17 years ago. Now, Apple and Google products feel stale, and their business practices face antitrust scrutiny. There’s no better time for AI companies to build their own devices and visit the FCC. Otherwise, they’ll remain restrained by Apple and Google.
