This week, leaders from CFANS | U of M College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences and the University of Minnesota traveled to Washington, D.C., to advocate for increased agricultural research capacity funding, modern research facilities and strong support for the Farm Bill. Meetings with Minnesota’s congressional delegation included U.S. Rep. Brad Finstad and members of the teams working with U.S. Senator Amy Klobuchar, U.S. Representative Betty McCollum, U.S. Rep. Angie Craig for Congress, U.S. Representative Tom Emmer and U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar. Discussions focused on securing federal capacity funds essential to delivering on our land-grant mission — driving innovation, strengthening rural prosperity, advancing sustainability and fueling economic growth across Minnesota and beyond. This capacity funding is crucial for key University of Minnesota Extension services that bring research and resources directly to residents in all 87 Minnesota counties. Federal research investments power work happening every day across CFANS — from improving soil health and water quality to advancing climate-resilient cropping systems and supporting next-generation bio-based products and renewable energy solutions. These investments align directly with national USDA priorities and help ensure Minnesota farmers and rural communities remain competitive in a rapidly evolving global marketplace. The University of Minnesota delegation participated as part of the annual advocacy effort led by the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU) and the Council for Agricultural Research, Extension, and Teaching. Strategic federal investments in agricultural research strengthen communities, expand opportunity and ensure a resilient and secure food system for generations to come. The Global Agricultural Leadership master’s program, designed to train the next generation of agricultural innovators and leaders, was approved during the recent South Dakota Board of Regents meeting in Brookings. The degree program is a condensed, 14-month professional curriculum that will provide students with the background and skills they need to contribute to the vitality of agriculture and to the economic growth of rural communities in South Dakota while enhancing the lives of people worldwide. Jiyeon Kim, research assistant professor at North Dakota State University in agribusiness and applied economics, recently co-led a study revealing that rising exports may increase production risks for American farmers, especially those growing corn and soybeans. Presented at the SCC-76 Annual Meeting in Kansas City, the research shows that counties with higher export exposure are seeing more volatile yields, particularly in soybeans, due to climate-related events like drought and excess moisture. Using 30+ years of data, Kim and Jisang Yu of Korea University found that while international markets offer revenue potential, they can lead to riskier farming practices like monocropping or expanding into marginal land. #exports #soybeans #research #yields https://lnkd.in/gQ_FrENG
