How the heck did I ever get into NYU Law School? Before my third year, my wife had the opportunity to become an Assistant US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, so we were moving to the Big Apple. I was admitted to Fordham Law School and Brooklyn Law School, but wanted to go to NYU (or Columbia). As a graduate of Arkansas Tech, and transfer from DU Law School, my possibilities were, well, "non-existent"!? I literally talked my way in. I was told, "Why not go to Brooklyn and do well,…

I was told, "Why not go to Brooklyn and do well, rather than come to NYU and fail?" I convinced Dean Paschal that it was my law career, and I was willing to take that chance. I suggested allowing me in for one year could be considered a "public service by NYU to an underserved law student." My degree would be awarded by DU, I didn't care. He bought it. See, sales and persuasion skills can be useful. I loved it there and did very well. I was actually on the NYU National Moot Court Team. I also clerked for a NYC law firm while in school.

Naturopathic Doctors are trained early in their schooling to ask questions about the status quo of healthcare and to be cautious about doing things the way they have always been done. Given the state of health and healthcare, these skills are necessary to invoke change and look for new possibilities to inspire patients and policymakers alike. Being critical of study funding, conflicts of interest and bias are important skills in critical appraisal and can help keep a clinician’s perspective balanced. While our profession values critical evaluation of funding and bias in research, we recognize there’s an opportunity to apply these same principles more consistently to our own professional development. Conventions and conferences are made possible through funding from supplement companies and lab companies. Continuing education credits are kept “affordable” through sponsorship and third-party payments. This observation led us to see an opportunity to demonstrate how we might align our educational standards with the same critical thinking we apply to evaluating research. Sharing as it still needs to be said. Thank you Justin LaPree. Psychedelics need to be considered as part of a continuum of care that begins before the psychedelic journey. I’ve been teaching a powerful 7- step, replicable integration method that is also lasting. The method is based in ancient dreamwork techniques and somatic practices, both of which make perfect sense (when validity includes subjective measures). What I’ve seen is that in the rush to bring products to market or to extract the treatment from a full spectrum of care, integration has been handled like an afterthought. I appreciate yours and other voices that are insisting that these medicines aren’t magic pills, but rather one potent step in a healing journey that is in large part dependent on a commitment to change.
