Lots of great stuff in my conversation with Tufts University prof & Pharmagellan founder Frank S. David, but my favorite bit is this advice to biotech: "When you're talking to investors, your job is to turn dollars into value generating information." Isn't that great? He continues: "'Value generating' is the key piece of the puzzle. Not all the data you find changes the value of your thing. Atlanta produces exceptional drug discovery science. The harder question is whether we consistently turn those discoveries into medicines. On April 3, I’ll be moderating a panel at the 2026 Emory 3D Symposium hosted by the Emory Center for New Medicines on The Future of Therapeutics: the Future of Atlanta. Rather than just celebrating discoveries, we plan to pressure test the path from discovery to drug: • Why do so many promising academic therapeutics stall before reaching patients? • What translational evidence actually convinces pharma and investors to engage? • When should academic teams build companies versus partner earlier? • What would it take for Atlanta to compete with established biotech hubs? Atlanta’s ecosystem has grown enormously over the last decade. The next challenge is figuring out how to move more discoveries across the valley of death.
