𝗔𝗻𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄𝘀: 𝗙𝗮𝗿 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗮 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗘𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 Lately, I’ve been hearing the same thing from many credit unions and banks: “𝘞𝘦’𝘳𝘦 𝘣𝘦𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘯 𝘢𝘯𝘯𝘶𝘢𝘭 𝘳𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘦𝘸𝘴.” Some have also shared that regulators seem to be giving them a bit of grace — acknowledging staffing challenges, high loan demand, or competing priorities. But that doesn’t make me feel better — and here’s why: When periodic reviews are delayed or deprioritized, it’s not just a regulatory box left unchecked. The greater concern is that risks are going unidentified, and opportunities are being missed, at a time when proactive action is still possible. 𝗛𝗲𝗿𝗲’𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿: • 𝗨𝗽𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗮 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆. Timely, organized financials reflect internal discipline, organization, and leadership capacity. The absence of financials can be just as telling. • 𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗼𝗱𝗶𝗰 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄𝘀 𝗵𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗻. Declining margins, weakening liquidity, or increased leverage often show up in a review before there’s a covenant breach or missed payment. • 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆’𝗿𝗲 𝗮 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱. Reviews create a structured opportunity to check in, making it easier for the borrower to reach out proactively when something changes. • 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀. A growing business may need more capital — or additional services, or referrals to trusted partners. Reviews bring those needs to the surface.   If your institution is behind, you’re not alone. But the longer reviews are deferred, the greater the chance that something important is developing just under the surface. 𝗜𝗻 𝘁𝗼𝗱𝗮𝘆’𝘀 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 — 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘆, 𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗳𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗳𝘀 — 𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘆 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝘀. Periodic reviews are a practical way to do that. You don’t need to catch up all at once, but consider what steps you can take to bring focus and structure back to the review process. Even a few well-placed conversations could reveal a lot.
