(Not the towers. Not the coils. The actual water running through the system.) Most people think data-center failures start with hardware. In reality… a lot of them start with water chemistry. Here’s the part nobody mentions: **AI loads increase heat. Higher heat increases evaporation. Higher evaporation changes the chemistry. The chemistry changes the risk.** A tower can look “clean” and still be killing efficiency because: ▫️ Conductivity is drifting ▫️ Cycles of concentration are off ▫️ Inhibitors are depleted ▫️ Silica is creeping up ▫️ Microbio is growing at the wrong points ▫️ Make-up water quality changed after a municipal adjustment ▫️ Drift is carrying minerals into the wrong components And once the chemistry shifts, efficiency drops BEFORE the tower looks dirty. That’s where people get blindsided. Not because the tower is neglected but because the water profile changed silently over a few weeks. In AI-dense environments, these tiny chemistry shifts cause: ▫️ Higher approach temps ▫️ More fan energy ▫️ Lower ΔT ▫️ Hidden corrosion ▫️ Faster scaling ▫️ Higher BTU load downstream ▫️ And eventually… downtime. Skipping physical condition checks makes equipment unsafe. Chasing productivity while overlooking basic inspections allows small issues to grow into serious failures. NFPA 70B is clear because most electrical incidents start with details like missing screws, cracked insulation, loose covers, or breakers that no longer operate correctly. These are not minor findings. Each one increases the risk of shock, arc flash, or a breaker failing to clear a fault. Physical condition checks take minutes, yet skipping them exposes workers to preventable hazards. Strong maintenance starts with the basics done consistently.
