The PJM Interconnection is the first grid operator to fully adopt “ambient air” adjusted transmission line ratings, a measurement that can allow for fuller use of a transmission line’s capacity, PJM said Monday. PJM started using hourly ambient-adjusted ratings, or AARs, across its system on March 4. “PJM systems now leverage new, complex and dynamic data sets of line ratings that update every hour according to a stream of weather data of ambient air temperatures with forecasts up to 10 days ahead,” the grid operator said. “PJM system changes also synchronized markets functions to adapt to the new advanced data structures and dispatch methods.” AARs can increase capacity on transmission lines by 15% to 40% compared with static ratings, according to Ampacimon, a grid technology company.

Grid operator PJM Interconnection has implemented new “ambient-adjusted” transmission ratings across its system to comply with a federal rule aimed at boosting grid capacity without building new lines. The change, required under FERC Order 881, adjusts the amount of electricity transmission lines can carry based on real-time weather conditions such as temperature and wind, rather than fixed seasonal estimates. One emerging challenge in grid studies: modeling assumptions developed for synchronous generation don’t always capture the behavior of inverter-based resources. As IBR penetration continues to grow across the Western Interconnection, modeling practices are evolving. Traditional approaches don’t always reflect the dynamics of modern inverter-based plants, hybrid facilities, and increasingly complex grid conditions. As a result, utilities, developers, and regulators are placing greater emphasis on model fidelity, validation, and lifecycle consistency. One key takeaway: modeling is no longer just a study deliverable. It’s becoming a discipline that spans the entire project lifecycle, from early feasibility through commissioning and long-term operations. PJM and its transmission and generation owners maintained reliability of the electric system during the strongest sustained cold period that the PJM system has experienced since the 1990s, thanks to proactive communication and coordination that helped maximize generator and transmission availability and performance. PJM Operations and Markets staff briefed stakeholders on performance of the system last month and into February at the Feb. 5 Operating Committee. The weather brought multiple days of extreme cold, record or near-record electricity demand, and significant stress across both the electric and natural gas systems. From Jan. 16–21, temperatures across the PJM footprint stayed below freezing. The numbers are in. Yesterday PJM announced results from its 2027/2028 capacity auction, and once again they hit an all time high at $333/MW-day. The latest proof that our grid needs more power, and it needs it fast. Demand from data centers and manufacturing keeps climbing. Committed capacity fell 6,600+ MW short of reliability requirements for the first time ever across the entire region. By comparison, the peak power needed for all of West Virginia is just over 10,000 MW. So the regional grid is short power for nearly a whole state in just a year's time.
