Which brain do you want for your next board meeting? In my recent podcast Leaders of Future, I had an insightful conversation with Dr Cortland Dahl,  a scientist, author, and meditation teacher, Chief Contemplative Officer, Center for Healthy Minds, University of Wisconsin–Madison and Executive Director Tergar International and one of the sharpest minds in applied neuroscience and mindfulness to talk about what really happens inside a leader’s brain when stress and fear show up. We broke down a simple but powerful distinction: A brain working with fear sees the world in tunnels. Narrow focus. Rigid options. “If I don’t do this, everything will fall apart.” A brain working with awareness stays open. It notices patterns, questions assumptions, and stays curious instead of combative. In leadership terms, this is the difference between: Leading from “I must control the outcome” Leading from “I can navigate the uncertainty.” On the podcast, Dr. Dahl explained how a fear‑driven brain literally constricts our view : Short‑term thinking. Low tolerance for dissent. Reactivity to feedback and conflict. But when a leader trains their mind in mindful awareness, not as a fluffy practice, but as a core leadership skill, something shifts: The brain opens to new ideas, alternative perspectives, and creative problem‑solving. Decisions are less reactive, more intentional. Teams feel safer to experiment, fail, and speak up. This is mindfulness for leadership leverage. One founder told me that she'd rather have an 'engaged but problematic' board member (e.g., the Inquisitor, the lane drifter) than a disengaged or inactive member. She argued that by working with the Chair, or through one-one-meetings, she could help clarify board roles and the make directors aware of the potential (negative) impact of their actions/style. Their energy and engagement could then be channeled to help move the organization forward. With disengaged members, there wasn't much that could be done to make them productive members.

How does having a family versus nonfamily CEO affect the family business brand? This research translation of a Journal of Family Business Strategy article finds that a non-family CEO can enhance the family firm’s brand image, particularly in early-generation family firms, where professionalization is often a priority and traditions are not yet deeply rooted. However, in later-generation family firms, where traditions and community ties are more established, family CEOs are better suited to uphold the firm’s legacy and values.
