Crisis of the Week: United Airlines Faces Turbulence Amid Federal Probe
Wall Street Journal

Communications have been textbook–word-perfect, well-vetted and bloodlessly on message. But there are times when ‘by the book’ is simply not enough to do the job, and this is one of them. Extraordinary measures are needed.
“United Airlines, especially since its merger with Continental, has systematically destroyed customer trust and taught the public to disbelieve its rhetoric. Dead last in customer satisfaction rankings, it still said its skies were friendly. Before his ouster, Mr. Smisek was featured on the in-flight safety video telling fliers how much they were valued. Yet, just having gone through the boarding and flying experience, customers knew that wasn’t true. So, it will take extraordinary action on the part of United to rebuild trust, not just words. And the new CEO’s letter to customers simply promised that United would reach the floor of acceptable service, not the ceiling.
“To rebuild trust, new CEO Oscar Munoz will have to reinvigorate the United brand and demand that every interaction and communication made by United personnel lives up to that brand. It will take a 180-degree reversal. United will have to write a new book, and prove to us all that its words are backed by action.” -

You Have 15 Minutes To Respond To A Crisis: A Checklist of Dos And Don'ts

While we all know that crisis management training is critical for leaders and boards today, much of it still tends to be shopworn, focusing on the lessons of yesterday. The new climate of ultra urgency is rarely emphasized sufficiently.

While we all know that crisis management training is critical for leaders and boards today, much of it still tends to be shopworn, focusing on the lessons of yesterday. The new climate of ultra urgency is rarely emphasized sufficiently.
Yet I have found that in those first 15 minutes of a crisis your response must be exactly the right message, delivered in exactly the right words, to the right audiences, in just the right way – or you will have to deal with your mistakes for days, weeks, even months to come.
Immediate response and indelible accountability – that’s a tall order for any leader. -

The delegation was led by GEP Director Caron DeMars, of the State Department’s Bureau of Economic and Business Affairs.
The U.S. Department of State sent 11 prominent U.S. investors and role-model entrepreneurs–along with several U.S. government employees – to meet with senior Greek officials and the Greek private sector, including Google, Pfizer, The Boston Consulting Group, Pereaus Bank, and a number of Greek SMEs. The delegation discussed the key entrepreneurial opportunities and challenges for Greece. The delegation also met one-on-one and with groups of local entrepreneurs to promote their participation in key areas of entrepreneurship development.
The Global Entrepreneurship Program (GEP) is a U.S. State Department-led effort to promote and spur entrepreneurship by catalyzing and coordinating private sector and U.S. Government programs to support entrepreneurs around the world. It benefits Americans by developing new markets for U.S. goods and services abroad, diversifying the U.S. supply chain to a greater number of countries, encourages direct foreign investment into the United States, and creates a more stable world by bolstering global economic prosperity.
GEP supports establishing integrated entrepreneurial ecosystem by focusing on seven key areas of entrepreneurial development: 1) identifying opportunities, 2) training aspiring entrepreneurs, 3) connecting and sustaining them, 4) assisting with access to funding, 5) enabling policy decisions, 6) facilitating market access, and 7) celebrating entrepreneurial successes.Other creatorsSee project -

Reputation Agenda for Directors: A 20-Point Plan for Boards to Address Reputational Risk(Link)
See projectReputation is a hard concept to circle, especially at the governance level. Some try to quantify it by share price, business process metrics, or a complex algorithm of risk factors. Others equate it directly to brand equity. Still others, to fulfilling a social contract of trust with the public. And on Wall Street trading floors, traders will often yell out, at the beginning of a trade, “What kind of a name does it have?” as a way of encapsulating a company’s gestalt – the conventional wisdom…
Reputation is a hard concept to circle, especially at the governance level. Some try to quantify it by share price, business process metrics, or a complex algorithm of risk factors. Others equate it directly to brand equity. Still others, to fulfilling a social contract of trust with the public. And on Wall Street trading floors, traders will often yell out, at the beginning of a trade, “What kind of a name does it have?” as a way of encapsulating a company’s gestalt – the conventional wisdom of just how investible it is.
But no matter how you define it, corporate reputation has become one of the biggest, albeit intangible, assets or liabilities a company has, and thus an important consideration for the board of directors. -
