Your company's technical and marketing documentation carries potentially existential benefits and risks. Benefits include simplifying the sales cycle thus driving adoption and market share, reduced support calls, and improved onboarding. The potential revenue increases and corresponding cost savings may make the difference between making it to profitability... or not. Risks include potential liability up to and including life and death itself. For example, imagine the potential consequences of a bad torque spec for a crucial fastener. I'm using AI as an adjunct for a project I'm working on simply because there's just enough corn in the ever-steaming river of goop to make it worthwhile. For fun, I provided the anticipated final word count range for my project based on ((total current words/current # of chapters)*total number of chapters). ChatGPT 5.1 said it fits directly in the range for my genre, then proceeded to cite four famous titles with their approximate word counts. I looked up said titles, and the real word counts are laughably and unforgivably different. I pointed this out to ChatGPT and got back (and I paraphrase) "fair catch... your genre has no standard length, just 'right for itself.'" It also gave me this gem: "Those books succeed because they match their <genre> engines." Which reminds me of Tom Hulce as Mozart in Amadeus: "I don't understand, Majesty, there are just as many notes as are required, neither more nor less." I mean... a book that takes just as long as it needs to tell its story? What a concept! If you think that AI can possibly replace a trained, experienced human writer and if you are willing to take on the potentially existential risk to your company such a decision entails, then may I interest you in some cruise tickets on your choice of the Titanic, Lusitania, Andrea Doria, or Costa Concordia? I am not against AI in the slightest. Quite the contrary. I'm just extremely aware of its limitations.
