Jason Prestinario is a First Builder through and through. As CEO of Particle Health, his mission is to fix patient data interoperability, so your primary care doctor, specialist, and surgeon can all make decisions using the same complete health record. What a concept, right? And yet, it’s far from reality. That’s why Jason and the team at Particle are now suing Epic, one of the industry’s largest incumbents, to push for real change. Talking to users and thoughtfully integrating their needs and wants was woven through everything we did at IDEO—threaded through every prototype and product decision. Reading my colleagues Joanne and Leo's latest work brought that to mind. They describe a future where research runs continuously, with AI agents recruiting participants and instantly surfacing insights. Synthetic personas, carefully trained on consumer signals, mirror human behavior closely enough to extend live studies and compress timelines from weeks to hours. Today user research mostly runs in fits and starts, prohibitively expensive and locked away in dedicated project cycles when it could be a constant companion, seamlessly integrated into the product development process. "Product craft" seems to be missing in many consumer-grade product flows I interface with these days. It's wild to see just how many well-known consumer-grade tech products that end up poorly designing something as seemingly simple as an "onboarding flow," which then reduces the "top of funnel" growth these apps need to truly take off and gain virality. Take Two-Factor Auth and Single-Sign On for example. Consumer apps require 2FA, asking users to provide some form of #SSO (Google, Meta Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn) along with their phone number. This is a huge #painpoint for most, with many prospective users #abandoning their sign-up as the "push isn't worth the shove." On the contrary, the Partiful team has nailed this. While using 1FA, the app outsources #auth #security upstream, as the phone carrier (phone is the only auth method allowed) vets the mobile number on behalf of Partiful by successfully delivering the text. This (along with excellent #events driven marketing), likely helped them get to 500,000 monthly active users in Q1 2025, representing a 400% year-over-year increase #onboarding #growth #productgrowth #productcraft #craft #productsense #2FA #1FA #auth #productdesign
