Why Some Goals are not Achieved Have you ever heard the expression “let me count the ways”?  Well, that statement applies to the many reasons why goals are not realized. Let’s look at 3 reasons: 1.     Maybe the goal wasn’t YOUR goal. Maybe someone (supervisor, mentor, friend, family member etc.) suggested the goal. They said things like “this is what you should do; or this should be your next step; this would be a smart goal for you; etc.” The reason these goals might fail is because you might not be as committed to what needs to be done to achieve ‘their’ goals. It is important that YOU are completely committed to the success of the goal. It’s easier to stay on track if it is YOU that wants the goal to happen. If this is a goal your supervisor or boss has set for you, then it is important for YOU to find a reason to work toward achieving it. 2.     Maybe you need to rely on others’ actions or skills to achieve your goal. Once someone else is necessary for the success of your goal, achieving it becomes more complicated. There is a greater chance of you not being able to reach your goal. That is because you now actually have a secondary goal – getting others to ‘buy into’ realizing your goal. Once that is achieved, you have to include the steps that you will need to take to motivate and monitor the others who are involved in realizing your goal. 3.     Maybe other aspects of your life or job ‘pop-up’ unexpectedly. This is a time to pause, just for a moment, long enough to evaluate the urgency of this unplanned issue. Is it really urgent or is someone telling you it’s urgent? Can it be postponed? Which is more important, your goal or this new issue? Can you do both? Maybe work on your goal while you handle the unexpected. You may not be able to work on your goal with the same intensity, but maybe you can do some steps toward completing your goal. There is another aspect to consider. Is this a real issue or a distraction from achieving a goal in which you’ve lost interest and/or desire?
