P&I Daily Monday, Sept. 29, 2025   As traditional asset class silos crumble, CIOs look beyond conventional boundaries for yield. Institutional investors are navigating economic uncertainty with  fresh approaches to portfolio construction, and embracing a more fluid view of public and private markets, Caryl Anne Francia reports. At a recent Investment Diversity Exchange event in Newport, R.I., Steven Meier, CIO of the $315 billion New York City Retirement Systems, emphasized caution while acknowledging potential benefits of the current administration's pro-business agenda. Rhode Island's CIO Justin Maistrow noted unprecedented market volatility but remains committed to disciplined diversification rather than succumbing to FOMO. In a notable shift, leading investors increasingly blur the lines between public and private allocations, with Amica Mutual Insurance CIO Susan Chung asserting she's a "huge believer" that the two markets are fundamentally the same, suggesting teams focused on these areas should be combined. SEC dusts off disclosure rulebook with potential quarterly reporting shakeup. SEC Chair Paul Atkins announced plans to initiate a "spring cleaning" of disclosure regulations, with a particular focus on streamlining executive compensation disclosure requirements and tackling bloated risk factor sections in annual reports, Courtney Degen reports. Speaking at Georgetown University, Atkins lamented how risk factors have morphed from their intended "short, sweet summary of what keeps management up at night" into sometimes the longest section of annual reports, creating excessive duplication that obscures material information. The regulator will also solicit comments on potentially shifting from quarterly to semiannual reporting for public companies – a move championed by President Trump but which has raised concerns about market volatility and institutional investors' ability to make informed decisions. Defending the potential change, Atkins noted quarterly reporting has only existed since 1970 and pointed to the U.K.'s 2014 return to semiannual reporting as a precedent. The week ahead: Goodbye September. The Fed, which has raised concerns about the labor market, this week will be looking at employment data, with the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ JOLTS job openings (Sept. 30), average hourly earnings for September (Oct. 3), and the September unemployment numbers (Oct. 3) all on tap. Looking westward, we’ll be attending the National Association of Investment Companies’ Amplifying Alts Forum Oct. 1-2 in Los Angeles. Panels will discuss the performance and value of diverse managers, the factors fueling success in private equity, venture capital, and real estate, and private credit, among other topics. Finally, there are pension fund board meetings we’ll be tuning into: Arkansas Teacher Retirement System’s full board meeting (Sept. 29) and the Vermont Pension Investment Committee (Sept. 30).
