Ouch! Two competing FTTH networks in a town of only ~230 households. 🫣 This is now a recurring theme in the state of Maine. From Arrowsic to Vienna and everywhere in between. Every city, town, island, and township that was once served by FairPoint/Consolidated DSL has been converted or is being converted to fiber. These Telco overbuilds are a siren song for any ISP or Municipality that is planning to invest millions to serve the remaining unserved locations in Maine, which are few and far between. Greenlight Networks plans to acquire FastBridge Fiber, pending approvals in mid 2026, terms undisclosed. Oak Hill Capital remains the majority investor in Greenlight and Guggenheim Investments will take an ownership stake at close. This follows Greenlight’s Loop Internet deal announced July 8, 2025 and completed October 1, 2025, underscoring ongoing consolidation and faster fiber builds across the region. Today in Tech History- December 29th, 1949 – TV station KC2XAK of Bridgeport, Connecticut became the first and only pre-1950 ultra high frequency (UHF) TV station to operate on a regular daily schedule. UHF TV broadcasting is the use of UHF radio for over-the-air transmission of TV signals. UHF frequencies are now used for both analog and digital television broadcasts. UHF channels are typically given higher channel numbers, like the USA arrangement with VHF channels (initially) 1 to 13, and UHF channels (initially) numbered 14 to 83. Compared with an equivalent VHF television transmitter, to cover the same geographic area with a UHF transmitter requires a higher effective radiated power, implying a more powerful transmitter or a more complex antenna. Because the antenna size is based on the wavelength, UHF broadcasting can be received with much smaller antennas than VHF while still having the same gain.  The end of the war brought rapid expansion in the nascent broadcast TV industry. Thirteen VHF channels was found to be insufficient to support the desired expansion of broadcast television across the USA. Interference and channel crowding in densely populated areas (such as the eastern mid-Atlantic states) was a big problem. This bandwidth crunch was made even worse by the need to re-allocate VHF Channel 1 to land-mobile radio systems in 1948 due to radio-interference problems.  FCC rules published on April 11th, 1952, defined the final modern-day UHF allocation of 70 channels, 14 through 83, with 6 MHz bandwidth. It used standard NTSC standards. TV sets in the USA were not mandated to include UHF tuners until 1964. With UHF's reputation for reception problems, the fraction of new TV receivers that were factory-equipped with all-channel tuners dropped from 35% in early 1953 to 9% by 1958, a drop that was only partially compensated for by field upgrades or the availability of external UHF converters for separate purchase. TV set manufacturers often treated UHF tuners as extra-charge optional-items until they became required. Various FCC attempts to protect UHF stations were met with mixed results. While the smaller ABC-TV and DuMont Networks had a number of UHF affiliates, National Educational Television and its successor, PBS had even more. In the USA, UHF stations gained a reputation for local ownership, nonprofessional operations, small audiences and weak signal propagation. The situation began to improve in the 1960s and 1970s, but progress was slow and difficult. In 1970, Ted Turner acquired a struggling independent UHF station on Channel 17 in Atlanta. This station, renamed WTBS in 1979, was uplinked in 1976 to satellite alongside new premium channels such as HBO, gaining access to distant cable television markets and becoming the first UHF TV station to obtain national coverage.

Excellent work by the engineering team at CableAML in developing a fully integrated standalone model featuring both a 5G Core and VoIP PBX. A similar system architecture has been successfully deployed in military applications, utilizing satellite connectivity for secure communications with headquarters.
